As most people know, there are no big cats in Britain. There are only two species extant on the island, the domestic cat and a small Scottish Wildcat (felis silvestris grampia). This has not stopped many people over the years encountering what they believe to be Pumas and Panthers all across the island, which by right should be impossible, as these animals are not native to and have not been introduced to the UK countryside.
In 1986, my parents managed a small campsite in Argyll, in the west of Scotland, in a very rural area. The campsite was supplied with drinking water from a reservoir in the hill behind our house, so occasionally my dad would take my brother and I (he was thirteen, I was ten) up the path to check that the water pipes had not frozen and
ruptured overnight.
One day, as we were walking up the hill on a weekend morning, my dad happened to notice something in the rocks on the hillside. He gestured to my brother and I, and we both clearly saw a large cat, perhaps four or five feet long scrambling over some near-vertical rocks. The cat was dark, perhaps a dark brown or black, and larger than a dog, which it could not be mistaken for.
This was, naturally, strange, but the incident eventually receded into memory until a year later when my mother and I were driving home along the shore from a nearby village. At a small bay, where the road skirted a pebbled beach, a huge black shape lept onto the road in front of the car and dashed into the woods. It was clear daylight in summer, and the sighting was at very close quarters. Again, the cat was about five feet long.
These Alien Big Cats (ABC's)are anomalies. They should not exist in places like Scotland, or, for that matter, Eastern North America, but thousands of people see them every day. Anyone here had a similar experience.
Here's some web evidence and info.
