Smelly air coming from rotting lake

Edmonton - Rotting vegetation in Cooking Lake is the most likely source of the bad smell that's been hovering over the city, Alberta Environment says.The department has received dozens of calls over the past few days from people complaining of a rotten egg smell in the air. Many thought a sour gas well was leaking.

"What seems to be unique this year is the magnitude of release," McEachern said. "One of the possible reasons for it is that water levels are at historic lows, so you've got a lot of sediment exposed and you've got a lot of potential for this to bubble out of the sediments."
