I'm shaking ,, I came face to face with Un-American hate tonight
A woman told me to my face that I "should be tried
and shot for treason" :grr:

Why? because I have a Kerry Sticker on my car
or maybe it my Yellow Ribbons or my Flag ...

Could it of been my "has anyone seen my Constitutional
rights" sticker ?

Maybe the one that says "I don't have to like bush to
love my Country" .

I have the word VOTE on the back of my car .

I now know what you all who live in red states
live with ...

I'm shaking too bad to type .....insert DEAN SCREAM

Breathe Trish Breathe

I did respond . In my Supportive of the troops
and the Constitution way . I told her 700 Americans
have died based on a lie , she laughed so I said
American lives may be a joke to you but they are
not a joke to me . that's when she said I should
be tried and shot for treason . I said "for what
supporting The Constitution, lying to start a war is Treason ."

All she could do was shake her head and look down.
She never could look me in the eye .

I have never faced anything so disgraceful in my whole
life . I thought I'd share it ..

I'm a little better now after typing that out .

I'm in a heavy duty republican county (Dennis Hastert's home base is just down the road a few miles). I don't put any bumper stickers or otherwise up...I'm afraid they'll key my car.

Next time, hold up a mirror and take a good look at who the traitor is.

Honestly, after 45 years in this world, I've never seen things like this. Not even in the 60's.

43. I live in San Ramon
Which is a fairly conservative place in the bay area. My neighbors all know where our political interests lie - - we had a Clark Banner in the window and we since replaced it with Kerry's.

I'm flanked by cops on both sides, one cop made a funny comment that although he's voting for Bush, sometimes he thinks about voting for Kerry because he likes to get paid...

82. I don't think they'll ever change ... they've been 30 years in the making
the Great Depression woke up a lot of people ... but, I think these folks are too far gone ... the meanspiritedness engulfs their existence ... they've become what the colonists rebelled against ... many families have them ... I have a sister in law who thinks she's a Christian, but is so full of greed and hate ...

this particular woman probably thinks she's a compassionate conservative, too

GW could take all her worldly possessions, handed an eviction notice signed by GW ... and, she would blame Clenis and Hitlery

Faux, LImpballs, Falwell, and Pat Robertson have created a great divide ... they're traitors

16. I live in Tucson Az
Where it's an interesting mix. Arizona as you know is a swing state. Phoenix is mostly conservative, but Tucson is essentially a mix of conservatives and liberals, but overall liberal. I'm safe with my kerry sticker at the University of Arizona, but I do get a bit nervous when I leave my car parked in any shopping outlet, but overall I bet I'm safer than you people in the southern states! I think I'd leave my car totally bare if I lived in those areas,

9. There is a culture war going on in this nation
It passes by us on a daily basis and is hidden by our complacency. But the death of real dialog and ideas has lead us into a culdesac where are vital social discourse was mugged, beaten and left for dead. Now the two camps are growing further and further apart. We do not recognise each other until we open our mouths and talk. But that happens so infrequently that we usually never know we have passed by someone that thinks we are evil incarnate.

next time it happens think WWJS, What Would Johnny (Depp) say? Remember how he caught shit for saying that he'd rather raise his kids in France than the U.S. right now and he told it like it was regarding the current administration? He didn't back down even during the shitstorm that he had to have known would be coming. That's what we should all do.

I remember a note I got on my windshield back when I had four very anti-Bush, anti-war stickers on my old '88 Chevy, "Take these stupid anti-American stickers off your car NOW or I'll follow you home, you stupid filthy whore!" And that was at a COLLEGE!!!

I would have raised my middle fingers, calmly, pointed them in the air, turned a complete circle looking around me, and driven home.

"Officer, honestly....he came here completely unprovoked! We were just protecting ourselves!"

why do people have to hate so much?

it sure sounds like you put that lady in her place. You are a lot braver than I would have been. Kudos to you! Heck, I'm scared to put anything on my car, and have to carefully frame what I say when I open my mouth. (Red states are no fun, and after pausing to reread that, it scares me that I feel hesitant to express myself fully. What are we coming to as a nation?) I'm sorry you had to experience that...guess we are all getting to experience GWB's "uniting" tactics, eh?

Anyway, here is a hug  Go treat yourself to a favorite meal and long bath...wish I could give you more substantial advice.

48. I thank you, I am not so brave.
I admire you. That must have been scary.

It can be dangerous to confront people who are constantly being confronted with thoughtful opposition to their opinions and actions.

There is a cognitive disconnect. They think that their opinions are infallible. Then, when shown that that their deeply (or perhaps, shallowly) held opinions might be faulty, they simply cannot accept it. It turns out that they might actually be wrong, or need to reconsider their stances.

And, what the hell is the big deal about that? I have altered my stance on many issues as I have grown. It did not kill me, but it made me ashamed upon occasion about my rigidity in the past.

Too many words. I am proud of your handling of this situation.

but I am seriously considering it now. I just don't like bumper stickers of any kind, never have. Sure, I live in New Jersey, a pretty liberal state, but I'm considering it to see the reaction.

I'm often told I don't 'look' liberal, whatever that means. I'm 6'2" 255 lbs with a beard, really short hair and the look of a deranged lumberjack. Would be interesting to see if someone like me would get the same reaction.

44. I catch crap all the time here in the ONLY IL gop stronghold.
I live in an area just outside Chicago that is just about the only Republi-scum stronghold left in Illinois. J. Dennis Hastert, Speaker of the House is my Rep., so you could imagine what these buffoons out here are like. One recent Saturday afternoon, I went into a deli for a sandwich. Another customer noticed my "BUSH SUCKS" t-shirt. This corn-hole, who looked like George Will in the "right-wing" weekend uniform( pink polo shirt and khaki Dockers ), said to me, and I quote,
"somebody ought to kick you around a little for wearing that shirt".
So,I said to him, "well, how about you ?". He's about 5'7" tall, 160 pounds. I'm a large man--6'3", 230 pounds. He turned paler than he already was, and left quickly. As I was leaving the deli a few moments later, he appeared with a police officer, screaming about how I threatened to beat him up. The officer asked me what happened, I told the story as it happened, and the officer told me to be on my way.
My point is, don't let these clowns get to you. All they have to work with is their loud mouths.

Luckily I live in Wicker Park in the city, so I don't have to put up with that kind of shit. It's typical Republican behavior...he is the one who makes the first pseudo-threat, then runs to authority when he gets scared, blaming YOU for something HE did. I think by the sounds of it, you hurt her more than any nastiness would have. These are very scary times we live in. I mean, this woman probably would have never called you that if Clinton was President! I am ashamed that people are falling for the neoconservatives' power grab. We should have learned our lesson after the McCarthy era and Vietnam. And haven't people read Fahrenheit 451 where people use a constant state of war? It's also troubling that this is happening outside of conservative areas. Sorry you had to go through it, but again, great job! Keep up the fight! If we don't, the neoconservatives will destroy this country for a long time. :hi:

47. I'd tell her to quit listening to Hate Radio
I'd say "where'd you hear that, Rush or Hannity or Savage?"

Then I'd ask her why she hates someone so much, someone she's never met?

55. Living in hardcore hatred country (Northern Right wing Bible belt)
I can tell you alot of what I've heard about liberals from people:

"Why don't you communists and terrorists leave this country and go to Europe?"

"You aren't patriots. You aren't even Americans."

"We should abolish the public educational system. People will value education more if they have to pay an arm and a leg for it."

"Liberals are nothing more than a bunch of commie pinkish fags."

"All democrats should have their skulls bashed in."

These are the memories I haven't repressed. But, I've become jaded by it, so I don't care that much any more.

But the stupidest thing I've ever heard a conservative say:

"Bush didn't lie."

LOL!

56. I run into similar situations at least twice a week.
I have huge homemade bumper posters on my car. Ever time I run into BROWN SHIRTS, I literally quick draw my pocket Constitution from my back pocket” Where’s your Constitution? Have you ever read the patriots hand book?” I swear to God 100 % of the time they turn into Deer in headlights. Run to the bookstore its only five bucks.

In my calm response I would have added you’re the modern day NAZI who disregards the Constitution for your Fueror’s will. Or say umm “should be tried and shot" for not agreeing with the Fueror Sounds like NAZI Germany to me. I’m in Concord and Walnut Creek two days a week if you ever see a huge yellow sign on back of a car (guess who)

The positive responses (thumbs up, thanks) more than double the middle fingers (exclamation mark on a ignorant thought) so all in all I’m happy. Being on the front lines at first I would get steaming mad pissed, now I employ cold anger that triggers increased motivation to get the truth out. How funny I always think of Mari333 in these situations.

57. This scares me, because I really don't know how I would respond
On a good day I might ask about a million hard-to-answer questions and let the idiot dig her own grave.

On other days, I may just respond "Fuck you," smile, and walk away.

If this ever happens to me, I hope I'm not too shocked to be able to choose option 1.

67. "George Bush is the REAL man!!" That's what someone
yelled at me while I was canvassing for Wes Clark. I wanted to puke. I was merely walking by and didn't bother to approach this group (we were canvassing at a Razorback game tailgate party) and she yelled it at me. She said "We support President Bush". I said "I'm sorry" and kept walking. I truly was sorry to see someone so misguided. That's when she yelled that phrase to me as I was walking away.

:hi:

Sorry to hear about your run-in with a Rushbot.

It is a perfect illustration of the primary difference between Democrats and the evil GOPers: we do wacky things like put bumperstickers on our cars and go to marches to express ourselves and our frustrations, they tend to call for our deaths. :eyes:

Hang tough, Proud!

Edited on Thu Apr-22-04 10:22 AM by terrya
That's making me almost as mad as you, Trish.

First of all, the words "traitor" and "treason" have been bandied about WAY too much since Bush has taken office. This is the horrible results of the Sean Hannitys and the Ann Coulters of this country. They SHOULD be ashamed of themselves, but I don't think people like Hannity and Coulter HAVE any shame.

I'm sorry you had to deal with that jerk, Trish.

79. Sorry sweetie!
Ugh.

I've always considered SF and environs "safe haven." Turns out it's like this everywhere.

We've got a "Dean", a "Texas Democrat," and a "Re-Defeat Bush" on ours. I noticed our first major ding the other day, which was not there before the Re-Defeat Bush was put on about 3 weeks ago.

Breathe....you did good! I tend to freeze up in situations like this; I either get so mad I can't speak, or my eloquence goes out the window and I just start yelling profanity.

I hope for all of our sakes, your calmness can rub off on me.

Keep the faith!
You rock!

92. I got yelled at in the grocery store by an old lady.
She didn't like my BUSH LIED button. It is on my purse, BTW, and she looked over and saw it. We had a "nice chat" about the fact that this nation was founded by people who though political dissent is an essential right, and that it is true patriotism to stand up with an opinion.

I didn't swear at her, but it was touch and go there for a bit. I admit, I took umbrage at being told I needed to just leave this country if I hated it so much. However, I do think she was reassured by my statement that Rush Limbaugh and his "walking afterbirth listeners" were not representative of real Americans.

Nah, as flip as I am about my run in with the old hag, I walked away from that exchange realizing that there is a HUGE split in this nation that is not gonna go away anytime soon.

I've fought the abortion wars, and the battles for health care access and the GLBT battles too long to not see that the conservative mindset is there--but I don't think I fully grasped how prevalent it really is... It is one thing to be on a picket line and get yelled at, but it is pretty alarming to get shrieked at in the canned fruits section.

Proud Patriot, you did just fine with her. Be proud that you honored all who came before us and bled and wept for our right to dissent.
