Free electives in college
here's my dilemma: I already took 2 Sociology classes as electives. Now I need 3 more credits from the Social Sciences, but I can't take more than 2 classes in any one field. Are the electives really electives, or do they count as classes in that field? Can I take one SOC and have it count towards the degree or...?

1. It depends on your school,
but from what you've said you're going to need to take another class in a different social science. Schools vary somewhat in what courses are labeled social science, but typically anthropology, history, psychology and probably some others count.

Electives are electives, it's just that your school wants you to take courses in more than one social science. Do not simply take my word for it or try to figure it out on your own. Check with a counselor/academic adviser to be certain. Too many students make incorrect assumptions about what will count for graduation without bothering to verify what's really needed, and then are quite upset to learn, usually a month or two before the end of what they'd thought was the final semester, that they're not going to graduate after all.

2. Wrote that so I do not understand it.
Go the college book as it is all down in black and white. I have gone to 4 colleges and the books they put out are the best and believe me it can be a mess. I went from 4 credit classes to 3 credit and I was almost out of my mind. You end up taking a whole class to maybe make up one credit you need to make it come out right. Also some times lower level classes are higher level or other way around and you need to fix that. I ended up with 198 credits for a 4 year BFA. Foolish but I had to do it that way. Do not change colleges. And get the class that is going to count.I had a double major in my major and that added about 24 credits but I should have had a Masters with the work to line it up. Crazy.

3. Go to the advising office
Go at least once a semester, to check your progress in your degree plan, and to make sure that the classes you want to take are going to count so you don't waste time, and money taking extra classes that won't help you graduate. I know the catalog where I went to school was about as clear as the IRS code.

4. From what it sounds like
You need to take a social science course in another subject such as political science or psychology as part of your degree. You can take other courses in sociology if you want and don't need courses in other subjects but you need to take a course in another social science subject. I'd ask an adviser or someone at the registrar's office though just to be sure.
