CHEYENNE, WY —- After attempting to contain a living-room blaze started by a cigarette, card-carrying Libertarian Trent Jacobs reluctantly called the Cheyenne Fire Department Monday. "Although the community would do better to rely on an efficient, free-market fire-fighting service, the fact is that expensive, unnecessary public fire departments do exist," Jacobs said. "Also, my house was burning down." Jacobs did not offer to pay firefighters for their service.

6. Reminds me of that Tom Tomorrow cartoon...

from a few years ago. The cartoon was about what the "Free Market Future" would look like. It showed someone's house burning down, while the fire chief checked his books, and told the homeowner, "gee, I'm sorry, we're leaving and you're out of luck because you haven't paid this month".

7. THIS is not so far from the truth...A former room mate of

mine used to live with this family in rural Jefferson County Missouri. In the part of the county in which they lived they were required to buy a fire sticker and put it on one of the front windows of their house. This way the fire fighters knew whether a home owner had purchased the sticker.

This family had been away for awhile and had not purchased that year's sticker. Their house caught on fire and true to form the fire department responded but when they did not see a current fire sticker they did not put out the blaze. This family lost what had been a dream house. I don't think the couple ever recovered.
