Adding pineapple to a recipe does NOT make it Hawaiian!
Why is it that a pizza is a "Hawaiian" special when you add pineapple to it? And what about the fact that these pizzas usually contain CANADIAN BACON? How come it's not called a Canadian special?

I lived in Hawaii and did not eat many meals with PINEAPPLE. "I'd like the Hawaiian roast beef special, please." And does the waiter bring me a roast beef sandwich garnished with PINEAPPLE? No! It's just a friggin' sandwich. "I'd like a vanilla milkshake." "Would you care to make it a Hawaiian vanilla milkshake?" And do you think you get a milkshake with chunks of pineapple in it? No!

Even at a luau I didn't find much pineapple. You want to make a dish a Hawaiian dish? Add poi.

That is all.

2. What Do You Think of As Real Hawaiian Food?

I agree with your point, BTW. It must be annoying. But other than poi, what do you think of as Hawaiian foods or ways of preparing food?

6. I don't know
I was just being silly. The only truly Hawaiian food I remember eating was this, I don't know what it was, it was like a kind of bread, almost like a dumpling, and inside was seasoned, shredded beef. Those were tasty.

7. Kalua pig and laulau snap to mind
There is actually not as much truly Hawaiian food hereabouts as one might think. It has all but been drowned out by the Chinese, Portuguese, Japanese, Filipino, Korean, even Puerto Rican -- and now American -- foods that have been brought here.

Two of the staples at a lu'au are kalua pig, traditionally cooked in an imu, or underground oven (similar to a clambake), but now more often simply a smoky pulled pork, and laulau, a chunk of pork (with a small piece of fish thrown in for flavor) wrapped in taro leaves, or laulau, then wrapped in ti leaves and steamed. Both are often featured at local plate-lunch joints as a "Hawaiian plate" special on Fridays.

3. LOL!! Pineapple on a pizza makes it Thai... not Hawaiian.
First time I had pineapple on a pizza was in Bangkok, 1971.

5. Mahalo, Brah..!!
..I've traveled extensively, and I still can't help but smile ironically every time I see something "Hawaiian" on the menu...

99.9% of the time, the "Hawaiian" ingredient is... you guessed it.. pineapple! :-)

Thanks for the rant, scottcsmith...!

8. Besides, pineapple isn't even Hawaiian
It's an import from South America, isn't it?
