Poll question: Which of My Top 5 Fav Jazz Albums of 1959 is yours too?
Please excuse the Dave Brubeck (I know it's a very commercial album) but Blue Rondo a la Turk is just one of my favorites.

My Fave of the bunch is "Shape of Jazz to Come" I think "Lonely Woman" is one of the best jazz songs written, I find myself whistling it to myself a lot!

With Mingus and Trane in close second.

2. Going with Mingus.

What a great year.

On edit: no need to apologize for including Brubeck. Time Out's genius endures, and survives its over-familiarity.

3. Well, I saw your subject,
and I said "Kind of Blue."

Lo and behold, there it was!

So I voted for it.

4. I had never realized that all of those albums were released the same year

What a year!!!!

I have to go with Miles closely followed by Mingus and Trane as well.

Ornette's album is sick good too. I love Don Cherry.

That Brubeck album is worth mention just for the complex rythmns alone.

7. Billie Holiday's last album, just because it was her
and she was the very essence of what jazz has always been to me.

Bassist Milt Hinton's picture of her in the studio during those final sessions:

9. time to nitpick again
"Giant Steps" came out in 1960. :-)

Which makes choosing "Kind of Blue" that much easier.
