"We Built This City" (Starship) - Named Worst Single EVER!
Edited on Wed Apr-21-04 06:35 AM by matcom
<snip>

LOVE or hate them you can't get these stinkers out of your head.

Blender magazine has rated We Built This City as the worst single ever constructed in its list "The 50 Worst Songs Ever".

The magazine said the Starship song earned the accolade because it inspired "the most virulent feelings of outrage".

To make the list, each pungent ditty had to be a hit.

Entry was based on unintentionally poor songwriting.

Paul McCartney and Stevie Wonder's maudlin duet Ebony and Ivory also featured, as did R.E.M's Shiny, Happy People and John Mayer's Your Body is a Wonderland.

18. Hey, *I* liked it too!
But we know, naturally, what my opinion and twenty-five cents will buy you...

At least Don't Worry, Be Happy made the list. There were people at a place I once worked who would sing that all the time. To this day, I'm very proud of the self-restraint I exhibited at the time by not snapping and beating them vigorously around the head and shoulders.

2. Yes! The worst ever!
God, how I hate that song. Especially since it came from a band that was once The Jefferson Airplane. How far the mighty have fallen.

4. Exactly . . . . I wouldn't label it the worst song ever, BUT. . .
I would lable "Starship" as the most self-eviscerating band ever.

Worst song ever would have to go to Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds . . . . as performed by William Shatner that is.

10. Totally agree! If it was done by a no-talent like Brittney or Beyonce
or N'Stink or any of those other shit bands/artists, it would just suck in general and rank with the rest of that abysmal oeuvre of those talentless, artistry-lacking filth-sellers.

But since "We Built This City" was done by what was once a most awesome and incredible and important and downright ROCKING band, it makes the song infinitely worse.

I mean, if Clay Aiken or Snoop Doggy Dog puts out a piece of crap, you go "Well, of course, not surprised in the least." But when a legitimate band does it, it hurts all that much more (though at least the Airplane had the intregrity to keep changing their name every time they took a\n artistic nosedive so taht, technically, "We Built" IS NOT by the same band taht used to be good and legitimate.

5. The Sound of Silence made the list? Blasphemy!
"But the inclusion most likely to spark calls of blasphemy is the listing of the Simon and Garfunkel ballad The Sounds of Silence."

6. We Built this City, Paul Kantners favorite song.
NOT. He rags on that song to this day.

Some of those songs, We Built this City included, aren't that great but I think are far from the worst. As long as there is In the Year 2525, YMCA and Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye most of the top ten shown shouldn't be on the list.

12. Apparently meegbear has a high tolerance for pain
:7

I hated that fucking song the first time I heard it, and every subsequent time MTv would play it, which was many times.

19. They were free ....
meegbear likes free things.

Grace did a version of White Rabbit straight from Vegas and they stopped in their set to remind "you teens in trouble" to call the 9 Line for help.

I guess this is what too much drugs does to you. You don't realize how much you suck.

20. Blender confuses ironically "bad" songs ("Shiny Happy People")
with the real thing. Which is indicative of how thuggish some people's senses of humor are, how unresponsive to the signs of satire.

13. i'm in agreement
the song sucks as does the entire album.

it's hard to separate the Starship of old with that garbage.
it might be a tad unfair to compare but, how did they from Law Man
to We Built This City etc etc.

14. How the Macerana avoided the top spot is beyond me
As for City, sure it isn't a great song but if that is the worst someone wasn't looking hard enough.

15. Nobody wrote the macarena
A monkey threw rocks at sheets of paper with words and notes on them. So the Macarena is immediately disqualified.
