Any French Speakers? Help me name my boat.
Edited on Tue Apr-20-04 09:35 PM by patcox2
I have just fulfilled a lifelong dream by buying a substantial boat, one worthy of a significant name. I am agonizing over the name, it must be just right. And it must have a lot of meaning packed in few words.

Here's some of what must be present in the name:

It must be in french; my wife and I had our honeymoon in France on a canal boat and became convinced we were french in a previous life. And it pisses off conservatives.

It must reflect that this is a second marriage for both of us and that together we rediscovered love and happiness after long and unhappy relationships. On this point I am drawn to a word from the director of a movie called Marius et Jeannete, a story of middle aged, damaged people who rediscover love together, who said "it is necessary to reenchanter the world", so "Reenchanter" is a contender.

When I fell in love with my wife I had to drive across a long causeway across a salt marsh estuary every day to see her and I associated the sight of the thousands and thousands of dancing reflections of the sun on the waves with her. In the poem Cemetiere Marin, there is a line, "Mille et mille idoles du soleil," which is also a contender.

There is also Raison de'etre, tres bien ensemble, Panache, savoir vivre, bateau livre, but none of these have the whole gestalt of what I am feeling.

Any french speakers have any suggestions? For the name of a boat that is a culmination of a love story that began with the dancing of the sunlight on the waves and rescued two unhappy people from unhappy lives, bringing unexpected hope and joy and the discovery of a shared love of france and water and boats and life on the water? This is the kind of compression of meaning only present in poetry, I think.

39. Well
it's not a sentence, exactly, but you're not writing a sentence. I like it.

don't forget the final 's' in soleils though

or you could say: mille soleils d'un deuxième amour -- thousand suns of a second love
or
deuxième amour d'une mer des soleils - second love from a sea of suns - too long, I think

Or "Chateaubriand", meaning "your hat is on fire".

Or "pied a terre", implying that the plumbing's broken.

Or, more seriously:

"Le Felicite" or "La Bonheur", both meaning "happiness."

Is french inherently romantic and poetic, or are there so many poets and romantics here?

Truly impressed by these suggestions, better than we have been able to come up with in weeks of thinking. Douxieme Chance is a strong contender, as is Mille Soleils (my spelling is as bad as my pronunciation. Also mer de etoiles and mer de soleil. I am looking up translations for some.

Any way to play with Mer de amour and get the sun into it?

Thanks again.
