I want to make something perfectly clear
I know we've all been fighting a lot lately about sexist language and it's gotten quite heated. I've been arguing for a little sensitivity and consideration of the feelings of others and I've tried to live up to that ideal in my responses on the subject but I don't doubt I've missed the mark sometimes.

That said, I need to say this and get it out of my system. The next person who refers to me (or the other women standing up against sexist language) as "brown shirts"...well, I cannot guarantee my reaction will be sensitive or considerate of your feelings.

5. Apparently...a lot
The threads about sexist language on DU (the word "bitch" specifically) have gotten out of hand. The name calling has gone beyond the pale and I have been called a brown-shirt repeatedly. I don't alert on that kind of thing because I want people to see what kind of names I get called when I stand up.

12. In what manner was said word used?
I mean, I used it last night in a post/rant to refer to Ann Coulter(Cocaine Politics thread). Having said that, the word seems to be strangely appropriate and accurate when speaking of Ann The Man. On the other hand, it is a word I do not care to use much. If nothing else it cheapens the impact, just like using any strong language. Said language is best employed tactically.

Sure hope you guys calm down. I hate to see my friends like this.

8. Not intended as such
Although, since everyone else gets to start one, why shouldn't I? :)

Seriously, no ulterior motive here. Merely informing people of my extreme displeasure at that particular bit of name-calling and informing them that there may be consequences in future. :)

4. Yes
It's a good thing most of these threads were locked before I saw them. I would have had a few deleted, I'm sure.

10. I don't even *own* a brown shirt.
The closest I have is a natty olive one.

There is a line from a movie, Hercule Poirot?, which Roddy McDowell's character asks, "Is vulgarity a substitute for wit...?"

I have always loved that line.
