2. Okra only gets slimy when it is overcooked.
It is delicious gumbo dishes, soup and when breaded in a simple mixture of milk, egg, bread crumbs and spices, then fried.

25. Fried Okra
Fried okra, when breaded correctly, is never slimy. it all gets cooked out and gets crunchy. There's nothing like some good crunchy okra on a hot Oklahoma evening with your favorite Steak, Chicken, or Pork chop.

8. Natural Thickener
Okra is most suited as a complement to other ingredients. I agree that it's a bit difficult all by itself, but I still like it that way. If you want to get minimal, try it stewed with tomatoes and onions. (The other recommended dishes in this thread are great ideas, too.)

That vegetable has pretty decent Vitamin C content, so it's certainly worth eating some.

11. Okra is wonderful!
Fried, or just cooked and served buttered. It really goes down easy.

We are having it tomorrow with black-eyed peas and Tex-Mex cornbread.

Okra and grits are just a part of the South.

Fried is the best, but it takes so long to fix!

12. All of you must try this:
Take young tender okra, 3 inches long, hopefully fresh-picked if you live in the south. Steam it until it just turns bright green, WHOLE. Then arrange on a plate with good quality mayonnaise for a dip.

I like it hot, but mild is okay too. It's in the pickle aisle -- sorry, can't remember the brand name. Try it... it will surprise you.

18. I guess you don't want to do a garden tour with me.
I toured my friend's garden last week; as we ambled along looking at how everything was growing, we picked some okra and snacked on it raw, straight from the plant. Yummmm

:9

21. Bleah!
My first job in high school was at Church's Fried Chicken...they had deep-fried okra. I tasted it and almost wanted to vomit. Never, ever was able to acquire a taste for it. I think it's one of those things you have to have grown up eating.
