Anyone watch some, or all, of the Chris Rock HBO special?
I thought he was very uneven and rather flat. I turned the channel after 45 minutes of spoiled expectations.

A few very funny bits but overall I was disappointed.

1. A small bit
He did slam Bush...said "A black man with a C average can't get a job as a manager of Burger King, but a white man with a C average is President!"

3. Like I said there were a couple of funny parts.
But he just wasn't as funny as I hoped he'd be.

The Baltimore/Iraq joke was probably my favorite.

10. My favorite joke, as well
I'd have to say, I enjoyed most of the first hour, but I actually thought it went downhill once it became nothing more than sex/marriage jokes. I mean, they were funny, but that's nothing that hasn't been said before.

Granted, I mostly liked the Iraq/Baltimore thing as I am from around Baltimore. Always nice when the hometown gets a plug. :)

4. I've been watching it...
Not one of his best. Some better moments, but not like I remember his other stuff.

5. You missed a lot of good stuff!
The last part, about there being no sex after marriage, was hilarious!

8. I watched the whole thing . . . waste of time, IMO

Chris Rock used to be funny, but lots of people are funny. He was also very, very perceptive, able to see to the core of things and pull out some raunchy piece of truth. Tonight was either wrong-headed, mean-spirited, cliched, or just raunch for raunch's sake. I was very disappointed. Run-of-the-mill humor, only funny if you've had a few.

I think he's gone the way of Eddie Murphy and Roseanne--too much money to be perceptive any more.

Well, we've still got Jon Stewart, D. L. Hugeley, and George Carlin.

9. Carlin's last stand up was terrible! 20 minutes talking about body hair!
Sure Chris Rock was flat in a few places, but the crowd loved it.

He mentioned the media, "Bush killed Laci Peterson!" was hiliarous. He talked about class wars, race, and black history.

He is helping people wake up, I was proud, the Miceal Jackson bit killed me.

So I'm sorry that he may not have been political the whole time, but he was educating the folks in that audience.

If a few million people finally get it because of Chris Rock, good for us.

11. I disagree
Actually, now that you mention content, I thought he was pretty misogynist. I know, I know--he tried to insulate himself against the charge with the rap bit--essentially saying women don't mind misogyny. Maybe that's where he lost me. I was offended, and it seemed to get worse from there. The bit about marriage? It just sounded bitter and shallow and whiny. And mean.

The only political message I got was that you shouldn't pick sides--just go issue by issue. Nonsense, unless you're rich.

I've seen audiences rolling in laughter at decidedly unfunny, mediocre comics--so I justify that in my own mind, the disconnect between my sense of humor and what appears to be theirs, by just assuming they are stoned for the most part.

Humor is a touchy thing--very culturally based, and what strikes some doesn't necessarily strike all. It might have been that he offended me. But I used to think he was the smartest and funniest person doing comedy, I was prepared to laugh, kept expecting to, and never did. He has moved on from the kind of humor he used to do, and while that humor may please certain crowds, I just didn't get it tonight.

12. I thought it was hilarious!
Edited on Sat Apr-17-04 11:49 PM by RatTerrier
Some of it dragged a little, but some of his material absolutely killed!

And insightful, too. Interesting bit about Affirmative Action. Also liked the stuff about rap music.

The realtionship stuff was hilarious. It got me in some trouble with my gf, not because I was laughing, but because of the WAY I was laughing. The stuff was spot on, though.

I'm surprised so many of you didn't like it. May be because there wasn't enough politics. Frankly, I get bored with politics 24/7 and once in a while, I just want to bust a gut. And I did. I thought it was one of his best shows.

13. I didn't hate it it was just boring.
There were some funny parts but overall I still think he was flat.

As to the relationship jokes the only one that I recall being REALLY funny is the clear heel line.

15. Chris Rock is a little overrated
Back in the day when I saw his act, I remember thinking he was great. I had finally found a comedian that could hit it on the head.

Now, especially after being named the #1 funniest man in America by Entertainment Weekly, I'm no longer that impressed by him. Maybe it's bk psychologically I can see him selling out. Or maybe, like an above poster mentioned, it's bk he can no longer identify with most everyday problems since he's a multi-millionaire.

17. The word "HATRIOTISM" should immediately be added to Websters
IF Chris Rock's show had completely sucked and produced no laughter whatsoever, it would have been a 5 star event just for adding the word "HATRIOTISM" to the lexicon.

As for the rest of the show, I laughed my ass off. Thumbs way up.
