My sweet little sheltie died in my arms today...
Her name was Deva. She was 16 years old. She died of heart failure. She was the sweetest little dog I've ever had. Someone once said our pets are just little tragedies waiting to happen. That was mine today...

She loved to chase a ball, play with toys. My favorite is the way she looked at me, like she knew my heart, could read my mind. She was a very old soul - a great comfort. I will miss her.

After only four months, I can safely say that I'll be completely heartbroken when little Ash decides to check into his litterbox in the sky. If it's any consolation, I'm sure Deva passed as a happy dog knowing that you loved her.

82. So sorry, I know how hard it is
I lost my favorite kitty Peewee last year due to heart failure. He was 15 years old. I think I cried on and off for three weeks, I missed him so much. My remaining cat, Miro, also wandered around the house wailing, and wouldn't eat. I got not one but two kittens in the following months, and our home is much happier now (Miro loves his new friends!) I still miss my Wee, but I feel fortuate to have had such a loving and devoted "fur kid" in my life. I'm certain that your sheltie felt the same way about you. You are obviously a loving and devoted "fur parent".

16. shelties are very good indeed
When my sister is out of town she leaves her sheltie with me.
Once in a while he herds my cats, and they seem to get a big kick out of it.
At night, they all sleep with me.
The loss of a 'pet' is the loss of a trusted friend.

22. I'm sorry. You'll meet again, though...
Rainbow Bridge

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

Author unknown...

May she rest in peace.

I have a Sheltie, his name is Chuck- he's 9 years old. He's starting to show his age now and I dread going through what you did today. I'm glad you were able to hold her at the end. Seems every time I go to the vet there's sombody having there dog put down- it's terrible to watch. Chuck is always so scared at the vet that I really hope his last is at home.

46. My Fergie died last August
I still grieve every day for him. He was the best cat ever, and I had him for 17 years (he was 19 when he died).

I have a sterling silver sitting cat necklace my husband gave me years ago. I've been wearing it every day and try to control my sadness over Ferg by touching the necklace and remembering some sweet memory of Ferg. Sounds stupid, but it does seem to help.

48. I'm certain that she was happy in the years she was with you.
I'm am so sorry for your loss. I feel your pain. It's like losing a child. If it is any consolation, 16 years is a long life for a dog. So in human years, she was over 100. We humans should live that long.

I lost a Rottweiler in 1999. She was almost 12 years old and my heart was broken. I have another Rottie who is 6-1/2 and I hope to keep her around for another 6 years.

I hope that if you get another doggie, you will consider a dog from an animal shelter because you will be saving that dog's life.

Yesterday I took our sick cat, Spartacus, to the vet. We were given several options. Thousands of dollars worth of surgery, some slightly less expensive procedures that may or may not help, or euthanasia.

I brought him home while we tried to decide what to do but, ever the smart and dignified cat, he has taken the decision out of our hands. He has stopped eating and gone into a quiet place in the closet. We're just trying to make him as comfortable as possible and waiting.

Sue got Spartacus the first year we were dating, and he's been with us ever since. She can't stop crying. Neither can I.

It's a small price to pay for their lifetime of love. Our grief won't last nearly as long as our joy has. Neither will yours.

I've been crying my eyes out thinking of how utterly devastating it is when we loose our precious furry critters. I'm so sorry for your loss. I lost my Haley in 2001 and still think of her often. I'm also a fan of The Rainbow Bridge and I know that Deva,Haley, and the other DU critters are romping together having a wonderful time. My Haley was a devout democrat as I'm sure Deva was!!! I bet all of the DU critters find each other over there and hang out. The Rainbow Bridge has a great website where people honor their pet's lifes with pictures and stories. For a fee of around $25 you can do the memorial (the proceeds go to an animal shelter). Be forewared though, it's a tear jerker but also comforting. Peace and you're in my thoughts.

72. Thankyou so much ...
I tell you , the emptiness is just staggering right now. I lost my first Sheltie, Simon, several years ago and I thought I would never get over it. Deva was there and helped me through it. Now I have Miss Maggie - shes as lost as I am - sweet little thing - she keeps running around looking for her. It just breaks my heart. Thanks for the reference to the website.

76. Another point
It really hurts to know our pets will die someday, and the time goes way too quickly. But I feel that the good times, love, and companionship are worth what we'll go through. It's nice to know your dog died feeling loved. :hi:

When we lost our kitty our whole family was in deep grief. Two years have gone by. We have her ashes in a little shrine, and every morning my daughters says goodbye to her and our 2 living pets before she goes to school. We do have a sense she's still here with us.. .

the website is www.rainbowsbridge.com. It helped along with the grieving process which involved a lot of crying. I'm so glad you have Maggie to be with you and they say (a vet friend of mine) maybe some extra little treats for her might comfort her also. Peace and love.

I know how it is to love your pet and have them die, you have my sympathy. I believe that if there is a heaven, it wouldn't be heaven without our beloved animals and you will be reunited one day.O8)

80. I am so sorry.
Take comfort in knowing that you gave her a very good life.

I decided a long time ago that, if there is a God, then God has to love our animals as much as he loves us, i.e., if there's an afterlife, then there has to be one for them too. I believe (acutally, hope is a better word here) that my departed pets will be there waiting for me when I die.

Let me tell you something Mark Twain said--maybe to bring a little smile to you. He was discussing the theological issue of whether souls go to heaven through merit or through election. He said it had to be election, because if it was merit, then it would be dogs, not people, who went to heaven.

81. little tragedies waiting to happen
perhaps not so little but that's only because of the limitlessness of how we love them and how they love us ...

i am truly sorry for your loss ... what a cruel design that we live longer than our pets ...

i am sure that when you're ready, you will once again share your appreciation for those of the canine persuasion ... my kindest thoughts are with you ...
