5. Ooh! Good one!
That is a Western I watched more than once. I actually did kind of like Gunsmoke too, though, now that I think of it. I was kind of young when it was on and I found a lot of it boring, but some was beautiful. Love the sound of horse hooves racing across the prairie.

21. I vote Wild Wild West too
I've seen reruns of it on TNT. Robert Conrad, I think that is his name, in those oh-so-tight pants. I didn't even pay attention to the storylines. Too busy looking at him. Is it getting hot in here?

4. Gunsmoke AND Bonanza
Westerns ruled TV in my youth, literally all of the above were great, along, of course, with Kirk, Spock, Scotty, Doc and crew of Star Trek.

16. I third Briscoe - in the comedy/western category - and how about
that Dixie?
For straight westerns, Richard Boone as Paladin was about the best.
and when I was very young, in my opinion nothing could top ol' Hopalong Cassidy (only good guy to wear a black hat).

18. I voted "other"
I have several faves:
"Custer" starring Wayne Maunder and Slim Pickens...fabulous disaster of a tv western circa 1968.
Wayne Maunder stars as Colonel Custer now reconfigured as a long haired counter insurgency expert fighting the indians in the Dakota Territories.
It is so earnest and weird...like Star Trek on horseback sans the wit and intelligence.

"The Loner", Lloyd Bridges' stars in a western produced by Rod Serling!
Interesting post Twilight Zone one season wonder from Rod....

"The Life and Legend of Jesse James" starring Christopher Jones as the famous outlaw.
Last only a season...tried to see Jesse's side of the story.

boy, his role sure was eclipsed by that wonderful Penny.

Out of the greater blue of the western sky....comes Sky King...

Man, a two edit speilling day! Hey trof, my deceased neighbor buddy was a pilot between jobs when he landed the gig of flying one of the two C- 54's (?) around on a one day ferry license from the FAA to film stock footage for the series and deliver the planes to the studio. They landed the planes in Apple Valley, California, where one got chopped up for studio shots, the other idled on the tarmac for outside ones.

And I can't list o'l Bill Boyd in a 'favorite' thread because he had a child by a distant relative of mine and then abandoned her and went to Hollywood. (Lot's of my relatives/ancestors had "round heels.")

33. As My User Name Indicates......
....I am a huge fan of "Have Gun Will Travel." I've seen a few episodes of it in recent years, and they really hold up well after all these years.

That being said, I think that "Deadwood" is the most compulsively watchable show on TV today. A solid A-Plus as to writing, directing, acting, and everything else. Check it out.

40. Loved it also...
did you ever notice all of the subervise stuff going on? Every other episode, Connors would be stripped to the waist in preparation for a horsewhipping. Women would fall for him and he would not be able to reciprocate. And I'm not even gonna go into that broken sword in the scabbard...
It's as is Tennessee Williams was on the writing staff. A great show.

42. Oh, yes...It also has a liberal slant
ULysses Grant was portrayed as a hero, left-wing radical; the bad guys treated Indians like animals, Conners fought for them.

we also had some junior high knockoffs of the theme song:

"Stranded! Stranded on the toilet bowl!
What will you do when you're stranded,
and you don't have a roll!

You know you're a man, you must do what you can
You're a man--wipe with your hand!"
