We liked "The Bunch of Grapes" near Harrod's. They had a really nice little room up the stairs, no smoking. Nice way to enjoy tasty but bad for you pub grub.
It's good for Bass and people-watching. I found it difficult to find a bad pub, actually. One of my favorites was a Guinness house on Euston Road near the Great Portland St Underground station.
Now maybe I'm just a complete beer snob but I have yet to find a really good real ale pub in London. Too many of the London pubs I've been in either don't have a good range or just don't keep their beer well enough.
Outside of the Great British Beer Festival at Olympia I guess I prefer to keep to the places I know outside of the capital.
Next door to the Kensington Hilton. It was many years ago, but they had great pub food and a congenial bunch of patrons. There was an open courtyard in back where we grilled steaks in good weather.
