1. I'm at 24
gotta remember, though, that BMI doesn't take into account body type or differentiate between weight due to muscle or due to fat. it should only be used a fairly loose guideline, and probably not by athletes at all.

4. Yep. You can be in terrible shape and still have a 'normal' BMI
Just wasting my time in ever more nonsensical ways. Hopefully this isn't a sensitive issue. :scared:

5. I am horrifyingly out of shape, and my BMI fluctuates in the low 20s.
My sister is in fabulous shape -- she runs half-marathons on a regular basis (she's done a full marathon once). She could kick just about anyone's butt fairly readily. She's "overweight" by BMI standards.

20. My son is built like the proverbial brick Sh*t house
at 13 he wears a men's medium shirt. His bicepts are bigger than hubby's. Yes he has a little gut, but he can drive a golf ball 280 yards. His BMI says he's overweight, but I know alot of that weight is muscle.

11. That thing is such crap
I'll freely admit I could drop a few, but that^^ puts me in the *unhealthy* range of 28.8...

I did gymnastics and took ballet for 14 of my first 18 years...plus I am "blessed" with ridiculous muscle tone in my lower body...I could KILL a man by squeezing him between my thighs, dammit!! :P

So they can take their *unhealthy* crap and put it where the nuclear waste don't shine, pa'tner...;)

14. One can have a high BMI and be in top shape too
BMI is meant for those who need an easy way to determine if they are out of shape and need to lose weight. One can be at lets say 205 pounds, 5'9, with a BMI of 32, however, have a body fat percentage of 6 percent, all muscle, no fat, in excellent shape, but BMI will say otherwise.

Just barely what they say is normal weight. And I've gained 20 pounds in the last 5 months and holding steady.

23. Great BMI
at 19. I'm slim but not in good shape, muscle and cardiovascular ways. Funny, how it fools people. "You must work out! You must diet!" No, I loaf about and don't eat right and sleep poorly and stress myself out over things I can't control. Boy-oh-boy, now that's healthy. Melts the pounds right off.

BMI is a pretty good initial indicator of overweight. But there is much more to be taken into account, such as muscle mass vs. fat ratio, and all that you smart people have already mentioned.
