3. I remember hearing that during & after Vietnam as well.
I guess the best response is that those sorts of solutions have been tried, & don't work nearly so well as the mass murderer expects.

5. ask them, if they were a policy analyst
who for every policy had to include a list of potential drawbacks (e.g., likely negative consequences) - to try to generate a list of all of the possible blowback scenarios from engaging in genocide of 85% of the population of Iraq.

Funny how Iraqis need to be killed-off in order to be free, but that wasn't needed for the white American revolutionaries...

20. OK...
My first response was "WTF" but then after closing gaping mouth it occurred to me that they may have a loved one in Iraq. Also, I think the Falluja incident bush*whacked some people. It must always be remember that the US and the accomplice media have for over a decade, in spite of their "Saddam is an evil dictator" repertoire, have actively portrayed Muslims, by and large, as rapist and women oppressor. It has been an anti-Muslim campaign. If one were to do a survey of major news over the past decade or so, the stories have been mostly negative towards the Muslim faith. Do you remember the female circumsion stories? Most pertained to the practice in Egypt. But if the subject matter is something unfamiliar to the general public it gets applied with a broad brush.
I believe this person reacted out of frustration and a lack of understanding.

24. "Most people dont have the stomach to do what needs to be done in Iraq.
I agree with him up to the end of this sentence.

My problem now is that as the invading army, we must either turn over self rule and leave them to the process of cleaning up our mess OR we need to enact a system of violence and brutality that would make most Americans vomit, even the repugs.

This is quickly turning into a no-win situation. We (as a nation) fucked up, big time. Iraq, as a nation is fucked up (in large part due to us). We are failing as the conquerors. We simply are not blood thirsty enough to justify the sort of brutality that conquest requires.

That said, I don't endorse this sort of violence. I'm also torn about how to proceed in Iraq. Do we stay and try to help rebuild and suffer death everyday? Do we simply pull out and let "the savages" work it out? Do we send in 1,000,000 more troops and simply crush them into submission? Do we send the government aid for the next sixty years so that the people in power can skim money off the top and get rich while Joe Iraqi lives in a rubble pile?

I see no good solutions.
