This is my 100th post!
And I have a confession to make. I, Orion523, was once a conservative, no, reactionary. When I was very young until about a year and a half ago. My parents were always conservative, so I naturally followed in their footsteps. Then, right around when Bu$h was stomping around, trying to garner support for his war in Iraq, I began to become politically aware. That is when I began to see the logical fallacies within the conservative's arguements. The cruxes of their most core ideas were foolish and often asinine, not to mention insensitive and, contrary to Bu$h, not compassionate.

The War in Iraq is what really turned me around. Dumbya's obsession with eschewing providing evidence for the invasion was too suspicious. I knew something was up. I began to educate myself more, and discovered more idiotic arguements, especially relating to their fundamentalist views on homosexuality. I hope you all here at DU can forgive me. I am proud to now be a true blue patriotic LIBERAL!

1. Congratulations!!!!

Congrats on both your 100th post and also your discovery of the truth!:-)

I have several friends who considered themselves republican until they looked more deeply at the issues, and others who just changed their minds over time. No matter how the conclusion is reached, we are glad to have you over here!

edited to add:
In addition, I'd like to add that many republicans take Bush at his word, when the reality is that he is NOT a true republican. I don't have near as many beefs with *real* republicans, who believe in the Constitution, as opposed to trampling on our rights to further their cohorts' business interests.

2. Woo Hoo!
:bounce:

Maybe you can even win over a few freepers, as you would be well positioned to know their weaknesses.

3. My ultra-conservative friend says.....
the best way to win over a republican is to argue on THEIR terms, not on ours. Show them the ways that Bush is NOT a real conservative, or a real republican. There are so many ways to prove that... nation building, deficit spending, constitutional amendment proposing, intrusive policy making, Patriot Act-backing... none of those are things old-time conservatives promote.

5. Yeah, I frequently argue from their point of view
I'm fairly well known here as the 'bridge' between ultrafreepers and ultraliberals.

6. hello
In 1965 then Vice-President Hubert Humphrey spoke at the Uni of Santa Clara, not far from where I lived. I was 14 & wanted to hear what he had to say. He spoke a lot about civil rights, and the Great Society programs, & I applauded. Then, he began to speak in favor of the Viet Nam war. I jumped up on my seat & yelled, "You murderer! You are killing kids my age in Viet Nam! Stop the war now!"

Needless to say, the Secret Service got me out of there real quick, but not before some news cameras caught what I had said. Many years later, Hubert Humphrey was interviewed, & asked what had changed his mind about the war. He said that when he heard what I had said, he knew that something was very wrong with that war...

Gee, I hope we don't have to make 100 posts before we can start threads... hehehe

8. Holy Shit, JLC Dragon!!
Are you kidding me? That is unbelievable. You must be so proud. I will never again question the effectiveness of a solitary act of protest.

7. Cheers, Orion

There are lots of ex-Republicans here, too. I'm one of them, although it's been ten years or so. Once I started reading Loewen, Zinn, and Chomsky, it became impossible to hold on to the same world view.
