Barry Bonds Has 660 Home Runs!
Edited on Mon Apr-12-04 05:20 PM by ih8thegop
Tying godfather Willie Mays...

I saw the home run: a clean hit into McCovey Cove, named after Willie McCovey, part of an awesome outfieled team that included Mays and the late Bobby Bonds (Barry's father, of course).

1. I saw it, too.
I was flipping channels, and saw the game. "Hey, there's a ballgame on." It was 3-1 on Barry.

Next pitch was right down the heart of the plate, at the numbers.

Before he even swung, I said "660."

I was right.

4. Exactly, Barry Bonds is the George W. Bush of baseball
A total fraud but no one dares tell the Emperor he has no clothes.

Fuck Barry Bonds.

10. Except for the fact that Bonds was one of the 10 best ballplayers ever...
...BEFORE the bulking up/allegations of 'roiding.

Now, if he's NOT on the juice, he's top-3. If he IS on the juice, that doesn't take away from what he did before. Still top-10.

Bush is bottom-five, no matter how you look at it.

20. Before what?!?
How long has Bonds been on the Ahnold-sauce?

Yes, just because it was previous to ALLEGATIONS of steroid abuse, I mean there's NO WAY Bonds could have been using them BEFORE the ALLEGATIONS.

:puke:
:puke:

Hee hee. That's pretty funny.

Again I ask...before what?

The only thing Barry Bonds is a memebr of the Top Ten is Lying Fraids of Baseball, along with the 1919 Black Sox.

Barry Bonds is a fraud and a liar. I'd wager he's been on the Ahnold-sauce for a LONG TIME.

His records are void, himself disgraced. Here are 10 better players than Bonds (I know there are MANY MORE, but trying to tell you that is like trying to criticize Bunnypants on lucianne.com).

Ruth
Musial
Wagner
Jimmy Foxx
Mike Schimdt (better fielder too)
Willy Mays (considering the Ahnold-sauce, Barry Bullshit hasn't even gotten CLOSE to breking Mays' record)
Jackie Robinson
Ty Cobb
Pete Rose (as much of an asshole, fraud, and liar as Bonds...and as well-beloved)
Joe DiMaggio

Man, and there are SO MANY MORE.

Exactly what planet are you on? The Bonds Section of Uranus?

Even IF Barry STILL wasn't using steroids (which is laughable, he's been using) he wouldn't be in the Top ten.

 :silly: :silly: :silly:

21. Here goes:
Ruth Yes, he is better than Bonds.
Musial Bonds, sans sauce allegations, was his equal as a hitter. Bonds was, in his prime, a much better fielder (despite the rag-arm that couldn't throw out Sid Bream ;))
Wagner Well, that's hardly fair, the Dutchman was a shortstop! Anyway, yes -- I consider Honus Wagner the second-greatest baseball player of all time, behind Ruth. Then again, Wagner and the Babe didn't have to play against black people, Japanese people... the talent pool is MUCH larger today.
Jimmy Foxx Jimmie Foxx was a first baseman (yeah, he played a few games at third and catcher, but not enough), and first ranks slightly above DH in terms of defensive value. A truly great hitter, BUT -- he played for the Philadelphia Athletics and the Boston Red Sox in the '30s. The Baker Bowl (home of the A's) made Coors Field look like a pitcher's paradise, and the AL of the '30s makes today look like a dead ball era. Entire TEAMS hit .300 in the '30s.
Mike Schimdt Schmidt is the only player I've ever seen (I was born in '75) who could compare with Bonds. His glove was only a little notch below Brooks Robinson, and he was the best hitter of his generation.
Willy Mays Willie Mays was great, I do not dispute this. Bonds has been the better overall hitter by a shade, but Mays' longetivity and superb defense in CF gives him an edge. For now.
Jackie Robinson Jackie is often underrated, because of his historical importance. He was a truly great player. That said, he wasn't as good as Bonds.
Ty Cobb Not a great defensive CF; not much power, but his prime was in the 1900s and the 1910s. Right up there, but I rank Bonds higher.
Pete Rose A singles-hitter? No way in HELL. And I'm a Reds fan.
Joe DiMaggioNEXT! Hugely overrated. Quite a defender, and his power numbers suffered due to playing in Yankee Stadium. Still, not in Bonds' league.

You neglected to mention 1) Ted Williams (who was a better hitter than Bonds -- better hitter than ANYONE, save Ruth -- but was slow, and didn't give a damn about defense; and 2) Mickey Mantle (who was a better Yankees CF than DiMaggio).

PRIOR to the allegations of juicing, I would rank the following players ahead of Bonds:

Ruth
Wagner
Mays
Williams
Mantle
Schmidt
Cobb

Even now, the juice can't add THAT much. I would rank Ruth, Wagner, and maybe Mays ahead of Barry. That's it. Seriously.

27. 1) Steroids are used because of the PERCEPTION of effectiveness.
In weightlifting, they are very effective. Baseball is a different sport. Bat speed is far more important to hitting a baseball a long way than brute strength. Check out Henry Aaron. He was not a bulky guy, but he had strong wrists and could whip the bat around fast.

In other words, Bonds switching to the lighter maple bat (rather than ash) has more effect than ANY amount of roids ever could.

2) ASSUMING he is on the stuff, Bonds would have nearly as many home runs, and pretty much the same batting average. Again, we're talking about the difference between a double off the wall and a homer in the first row.

3) If you'd actually bothered to read anything I'd written, you'd know that I am NOT a fan of Bonds. I merely appeciate his accomplishments.

4) This sentence: "you're right, that sure puts Ted williams in his place!)" makes no sense.

5) Pete Rose hit 160 homers in his 24-year career, an average of fewer than 7 per year. I loved the way Pete played the game, but he wasn't nearly the player Bonds has been, with or without doping.

But it's all for naught, as I read this line:

"baseball is the WORST, MOST BORING of the 4 sports"

So why am I even responding?

3. Bonds can't polish Mays' shoes
That asshole, steroid freak wouldn't have hit 300 home runs without his old pal Aldosterol and other of Barry's Lil' Buddies.

Fuck that pussy Barry Bonds. I always KNEW he was a fraud, he's always been an asshole. I just didn't know exactly how.

Now I know.

Bonds deserves to be thrown from baseball and to have his power-hitting records stripped from him, the little (w)ussy!

6. Except that he had 494 home runs BEFORE he bulked up, prior to 2001.
If you're going to defame people publicly, you should probably have the first clue what you're talking about first.

9. This is evidence of the disgrace that baseball has become
Even mentioning Barry Bonds' name in the same sentence as Willie Mays' is a crime against humanity. Willie was one of the most important players in the history of baseball. Barry isn't and won't ever be. Besides, if Willie, Hank, and the Babe all used STEROIDS then they would have each hit about 1000 career homers. The feds raided the lab that holds the urine samples last week. Word is that SOMEBODY is going to be charged with perjury. I hope it's Bonds. Bud Selig deserves a lot of the blame for failing to clean up the game.

11. If Willie, Hank, and the Babe all used Steroids...
...they may have hit 20 more homers. In their careers.

It's asininely believing that steroids can turn mere adequacy into greatness that makes teenaged idiots use them. 'Roids don't do all that much. Maybe add a couple of feet to a fly ball.

Now, how many of Bonds' homers just barely made it over the wall, and how many have been moon shots?

It's the "just barelys" that one should be concerned with when talking steroids. Steroids do NOT add 40 feet to your fly balls, NOR do they improve your batting eye or your ability to hit a 90 MPH slider.

15. So it adds 10 feet? 20 feet? 30 maybe
has there ever been a test of exactly how much it adds? Dumb anaolgy... There's plenty of statistical proof of performance enhancement after injesting the shit. If it's adds just a couple of feet to a hit ball then why do so many Baseball players use the shit?

18. Dammit, I said I wouldn't argue about this!
;)

The best estimates are 2-5 feet.

Yes, roids can turn someone with warning-track power into a home run threat. However, Bonds was already hitting 40+ HRs before the (alleged) juicing.

I usually don't post long screeds on DU, but if you'd like, I will write up my entire thoughts on the matter -- as a BASEBALL fan, not particularly a Bonds fan (he can definitely be a jerk; and from remembering the old days when my Reds were in the NL West, I HATE the Giants -- nonetheless, I respect the man's accomplishments as the best baseball player of my lifetime, with the only possible exception being Mike Schmidt, yeah you heard me right, Schmidt).

24. You really refuse to acknowledge reality, don't you?
Steroids can do much more than you attribute to them.

I understand you are mitigating their effects because it allows you to continue worshipping a Drug-Abusing Fraud and Record-Book Thief.

Please continue to remian ignorant of aspect of the Steroid Issue that make you uncomfortable. If it helps save your ego from bruising and keeps you in a state of mental health worshipping a Drug-Abusing Fraud, who am I to say it's wrong?

However, if you wish to be informed at the rsik of shattering your illusion, start here:

http://www.nida.nih.gov/ResearchReports/Steroids/AnabolicSteroids.html

Good luck. And good luck with that whole "ignoring reality to retain illusions that make you happy" thing.

Not my cup of tea, but hey, whatever makes you happy.

I am firmly against the use of steroids in athletics because it taints the game. If Bonds admits that he's using steroids, how will you feel about him then? I use to Love Jose Conseco... Now I can't stand the bastard because he ended up being a fraud. His Power wasn't derived by his natural ability and work ethic..it was derived in a labortory.

26. Bonds has a long way to go to be the all time HR leader for the Giants...
Edited on Tue Apr-13-04 02:03 PM by Zinfandel
My San Francisco boyhood idol Willie Mays, will have that honor (648) maybe forever.

Bonds has 484 HR as a Giant. He'd have to hit another 165 HR's (in a Giants uniform) to top Mays as the all-time Giants HR leader.

No fucking way, not someone who will be 41 years old this year.

29. Well, he could double his steroid dosage
THEN he might have a chance.

He'd do it, too, IMHO.

What a f*cking disgrace if he is allowed to break Hank Aaron's HR Record and it is allowed to go in the books.

Baseball DIED as the "American Pastime" in 1994, though in truth it had been on life support for DECADES.

Now baseball is even more of a joke than it ever was, and that's going a long way.
