ZombyPeace Thread #2: Share Your Favorite Peace Quotes
I have dozens, but these few sound right tonight...

No matter how big a nation is, it is no stronger that its weakest people, and as long as you keep a person down, some part of you has to be down there to hold him down, so it means you cannot soar as you might otherwise.

--- Marian Anderson

When you're finally up on the moon, looking back at the earth, all these differences and nationalistic traits are pretty well going to blend and you're going to get a concept that maybe this is really one world and why the hell can't we learn to live together like decent people?

--- Frank Borman

The idea of absolute freedom is fiction. It's based on the idea of an independent self. But, in fact, there's no such thing. There's no self without other people. There's no self without sunlight. There's no self without dew. And water. And bees to pollinate the food we eat....So the idea of behaving in a way that doesn't acknowledge those reciprocal relationships is not really freedom, it's indulgence.

--- Peter Coyote

The longer we listen to one another - with real attention - the more commonality we will find in all our lives. That is, if we are careful to exchange with one another life stories and not simply opinions.

--- Barbara Deming

Pay special heed to that last one, my friends. --- ZW

2. My sig has a rather cynical take on peace
We have grasped the mystery of the atom and rejected the Sermon on the Mount. Ours is a world of nuclear giants and ethical infants. We know more about war than we know about peace, more about killing that we know about living.

--- General Omar Bradley

War is an invention of the human mind. The human mind can invent peace with justice.

--- Norman Cousins

3. subtle, sparkling, bright
dazzling, glorious, and radiantly awesome, in appearance like a mirage moving across a landscape in springtime
in one continuous stream of vibrations.
Be not daunted thereby, nor terrified, nor awed.
That is the radiance of thine own true nature.
Recognize it.

Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired, in a final sense, (is) a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed.

9. Good Morning
Peace is not the product of a victory or a command. It has no finishing line, no final deadline, no fixed definition of achievement. Peace is a never-ending process, the work of many decisions.-- Oscar Arias

Better than a thousand hollow words,
Is one word that brings peace.--Buddha

Teach this triple truth to all: A generous heart, kind speech, and a life of service and compassion are the things which renew humanity.--Buddha

It is the job of thinking people, not to be on the side of the executioners.--Albert Camus

We used to wonder where war lived, what it was that made it so vile. And now we realize that we know where it lives, that it is inside ourselves.--Albert Camus

Non-violence is not inaction. It is not discussion. It is not for the timid or weak...Non-violence is hard work. It is the willingness to sacrifice. It is the patience to win.--Cesar Chavez

Violence just hurts those who are already hurt...Instead of exposing the brutality of the oppressor, it justifies it.--Cesar Chavez

11. Okay, but you have to read through some things to get to it.
Terror, - September 14, 2001

The devastation numb within us
trapped in the heart, tumbling
in the brain like pebbles. The feeling
resembles lumps of raw dough
weighing down a child's stomach on baking day.

We have breathed the grit of it into our lives,
our lungs are pocked with it,
the mucous membrane of our dreams
coated with it, the imagination
filmed over with the gray filth of it:

the knowledge that human kind,

delicate Man, whose flesh
responds to a caress, whose eyes
are flowers that perceive the stars,

whose music excels the music of birds,
whose laughter matches the laughter of dogs,
whose understanding manifests designs
fairer than the spider's most intricate web,
turns without surprise to the scheduled breaking open
of the entrails of still-alive children
transforms witnessing eyes to pulp-fragments.

We are the humans whose language imagines mercy,
lovingkindness; we have believed one another
mirrored forms of a God we felt as good-

who do these acts, who convince ourselves
it is necessary; these acts are done
to our own flesh; burned human flesh.

Yes, this is the knowledge that jostles for space
in our bodies along with all we
go on knowing of joy, of love;

our nerve filaments twitch with its presence
day and night,
nothing we say has not the husky phlegm of it in the saying,
nothing we do has the quickness, the sureness,
the deep intelligence living at peace would have.

12. I'll share:

"Responsibility does not only lie with the leaders of our countries or with those who have been appointed or elected to do a particular job. It lies with each of us individually. Peace, for example, starts within each one of us."

-the Dalai Lama

"The belief in the inevitability of war is a self-fulfilling prophecy... We need an alternative vision, to see the world as one,
as interconnected." --Dennis J. Kucinich

"I like to believe that people in the long run are going to do more to promote peace than our governments. Indeed, I think that people want peace so much that one of these days governments had better get out of the way and let them have it."
--President Dwight D. Eisenhower

"When the power of love overcomes the love of power the world will know peace." -- Jimi Hendrix

“ I object to violence because when it appears to do good, the good is only temporary; the evil it does is permanent.”
-- Mohandas K. Gandhi

"My pacifism is not based on any intellectual theory but on a deep antipathy to every form of cruelty and hatred."
--Albert Einstein

I spend my time, not in generating anger over the world,
but in seeking laughter and love; in peacefully, respectfully
interacting with everyone.
I find common ground with people that I would really rather avoid;
I find a place from which to generate peace and
respect between us:
on an individual level, a professional level, a community level,
a national and global level.
I deliberately focus my energy to create peace.
I live and breathe
Peace.
