3. Speaking of which...
I don't follow golf, but I couldn't help noticing that Tiger Woods still keeps getting most of the press coverage, despite not winning any of the big tournaments lately... Why?

14. Simple
Tiger Woods is one of those rare athletes that are bigger than the game they play. If he retired today, professional golf would miss Tiger Woods a lot more than Tiger Woods would miss professional golf. And that's why he'll always get the most attention of any golfer from his generation.

17. He's already got the cutest kids-- next to mine!
Hopefully he's satisfied with the family he has.

Am I the only one who discovered tears in my eyes when he picked up his four year old and said "Daddy won!"?

10. I don't really follow golf that closely, so tell me...
...who's the "best player who never won a major" now?

19. Colin Montgomerie, although he's past his prime and unlikely to win one
Monty was the best player in Europe for at least half a decade and in the top 5 of the SONY World Ranking throughout that period, yet he's never won a major or ANY tournament in the USA, for that matter. Close calls in the '92 US Open, '94 US Open (lost playoff), '95 PGA (lost playoff) and '97 US Open. Monty seemed to become shellshocked when Tiger lapped the field in a few majors, and has not seriously contended in a major for several years. Still a Ryder Cup demon, though, sinking every imagineable putt.

Others who may inherit Phil's discarded tag:

* Stuart Appleby
* Padraig Harrington
* Kenny Perry
* Sergio Garcia

22. probably Sergio
Followed by Chad Campbell, or maybe Colin Montgomery but no way he's ever going to win one now.

11. that was really fun to watch . . .
I was rootin' for Lefty all weekend, but early on I was sure he was gonna blow it again . . . winning the tournament by sinking a birdie putt on the 18th is about as good as it gets . . . kudos to Phil . . . now if he can just take the U.S. Open, the British Open, and the PGA this year . . . :shrug:

12. It was fantastic
and to answer the question up above about why Tiger still gets the Press... Cause he's number one in the World in the standings even without winning any Majors...

21. Phenomenal theatre
And the ultimate defense exhibit next time we get one of those brilliant "golf is so dull..." threads.

I was torn between Phil and Ernie the entire back nine, but finally turned gung ho for Phil when I rationalized Ernie is much more resilient. That was not a loss Phil could have rebounded from easily, no matter the game and swing improvements.

Only thing I don't like about afternoons like Sunday: those shots trickling in from all angles and all distances lead the golfing neophites to conclude it's a simple game and virtually anyone could do it. Example A: a guy in the Stardust sportsbook who has never played a single round of golf insisted to me Sunday night that he could break 100 at Augusta National tomorrow. "You don't realize what a good athlete I am."

Like that guy who played roulette, I'd love to bet my entire net worth on the over.

20. It could signal something bad.
Mickelson is actually a natural right-hander. He took to playing golf left-handed for some reason (that I read in a recent issue of Sports Illustrated but can't remember the details of).
