Edited on Thu Jan-08-04 09:55 PM by Liberal_Andy
I was channel surfing last night (1/7) and on CMT, was none other than Toby and Dan Rather (60 minutes II rerun I guess), and Dan said, "Your position is you're pro-troops, and you're selective about the war, you favored going to Afganistan, didn't favor going into Iraq. That a fair accessment?"

TK: "I was uncertain on Iraq, I didn't know exactly why we were going in there, but when you support your troops, you have to support your Commander in Chief also. I mean he's, his staff and his cabinet makes the decision to go in there, I don't have to be the smart one there on that. I just know I'm not smart enough to make that call. Glad I don't have to, but I feel like uh, you know, the weapons of mass destruction and the why we went in. I'm a little, I'm concerned about that."

DR: "One man's opinion. Straight talk, was it a mistake to go in?"

TK: "It's probably going to be looked upon after five years from now, looking back, I think it would be viewed as probably a mistake that we went in, whether is was a mistake or not, I think the public opinion will be that it was a mistake. I think I'm gonna have to have more time to make my own decision on that."

Hmmmm.

1. Supporting the troops = Supporting Bush.
Gotcha.
Thanks, Toby. He said it best when he said, "I just know I'm not smart enough".

3. That's EXACTLY what happened.

It was right after he did a track with Willie that his tune changed.

If Toby freaking Keith does not support the war, you know it's got to be bullshit!

5. Good grief. Is Toby's middle name "Waffle"?
For being such a talented songwriter, he talks like a babbling idiot.

6. Hate to break it to you but...
He's really not that talented of a songwriter. He does it, yes, and arguably well, but he's no Sting.

22. He is not waffleing
He is confused about his stance on the war. He is starting to realize that he was lied to. As he said in the current issue of Rolling Stone: "It sucks ass that I have to defend my Patriotism". I think he is begining to realize that people were trying to tell him that he was being lied to and that Bush was wrong. He has learned that it is one thing to be wrong and it is another thing to make an ass out of your self proving you are wrong. Not to many people can honestly say that it is easy to admit to being a stupid idiot. I think he is feeling lost and set adrift by this administration.

"I can support the troops without supporting the President".

Hey, Toby: you can do the same. I do, and I'm one of the troops.

11. maybe I'm the eternal optimist but I think it's great that he
is admitting publicly to having 2nd thoughts. Yes it would be better if he did a 180 degrees, but most people won't do that. If he continues to think this way and the feelings deepen, and he speaks out, he could be very influential on a group that probably none of the Dems are currently reaching.

And by the way, I am not a country music fan and have no idea what his music sounds like!

12. when he had the opportunity to serve his country
Mr. Keith had better things to do. Now he fancies himself as some sort of flag-waving mouthpiece for the soldiers? Mr. Keith can f*** himself.

13. The sound of someone struggling with cognitive dissonance
A painful process. Given time, he will probably go against the war in Iraq. It's like what eventually happened with Viet Nam.

Toby Keith's SHOCK'N Y'ALL!
Y'all are shocked, yes? I'm a little shocked. Never figured that Mr. Keith would ever move further than a nanometer away from Bush's nuts.

because he is an evil motherfucker, cheering men who are going off to die in an illegal criminal war.

He is a first-class propagandist for an evil monster and should be treated accordingly.

He had doubts, but chose to ignore them and blindly support George Bush, because dissent is un-American? And he offered his support without reservation, and in public?

At least pro-invasion people are consistent. It takes a special breed of half-wit to suppress their own thoughts and let someone else think for them.

20. There's A Lot Of Rumblin' Among The Grunts...
Keith knows it's the "good ole boys" who are his bread & butter and a lot of 'em at Ft. Leonard Wood and in the military aren't too happy about this invasion. Look at what's happened to a lot of them over the past year. Many either have done hitches or face them in that hell-hole known as Iraq...and for what? The stories I've read of those who are speaking out make Nam sound almost tropical.

Then there's all the slashes in benefits to veterans, cancelled leaves and then "no-loss" order that have cost families in jobs, lifestyle and sleep at night...an for what?

There's a lot of people who put faith in this regime and did so with blind obdience...especially the military...and now they have 500, or is that 10,000 reasons to be thinking twice. My wonder is what's the "pain threshold" until the "vox populi" turns against this regime...1,000 dead?, 5,000? Yes, order are order and one must be loyal, but the possibility of endless war is a real fear in the military community. At least I don't think we'll be seeing the RNC wanting to count all those absentees next year.

21. You can almost feel sorry for the Country Radio listeners
and the artists (like Toby) who depend on the Nashville Formula like a junkie loves his smack.

Country Radio feeds its listeners a fantasy world of sentimental love, family values and fairy tales of little children talking to angels. It never gets closer to real life than a story-song about somebody's drunk ole daddy. Even then, there's usually a Happy Ending.

For Country fans, it has always been an absolutely safe bet to support the President (elected or not) in times of national crisis.

What they are totally unprepared for is the probability that said President is HUGELY responsible for this latest national crisis. Country fans need, crave a world of Black and White, Good Guys and Bad Guys, Absolute Right and Wrong--where it's easy to tell the difference.

They are having monumental difficulties dealing with the emerging fact that their Leader is also their Enemy. Cable news has nothing on Country radio as a brainwashing device.
