"Rumsfeld, in a Pentagon meeting with Time's top executives late last year, had correctly suspected he was among the candidates for the magazine's honor, and offered what one participant called some "free advice" as the meeting came to an end.

Time Managing Editor James Kelly told CNN that Rumsfeld's unsolicited suggestion to honor the troops was the 'first time in my recollection that someone who was obviously a candidate has volunteered someone else.'"

1. This one is just particularly ridiculous.

For many many years now I have tried to explain to people that Time's Person of the Year is NOT an award. It's not an honor. They don't hold a big banquet and give the winner a trophy.

It's a recognition of the person or persons who have, for good or ill, had the greatest impact on world events over the previous year.

Years ago, they held ot that. Hitler was MotY in 1938. It was NOT meant as an honor.

Unfortunately, in recent years, they've caved in to popular perception that it should be an honor, most obviously by choosing Rudolph Giuliani over Osama Bin Laden for 2001.
