So I'm talking to my non-political wife....
...who is a Democrat. I tell her about Lieberman's recent comments regarding the Iraq quagmire as being a "just" war, and that Dems shouldn't bash Bush.

Her reply?

She looked up at me with a furrowed brow and left side of her mouth contorted in a confused sneer-like manner and said, "If I want what Bush is offering, I'll vote for Bush. Doesn't Lieberman get this?"

So, as an informal poll result (N=1, margin of error +/- 99%), non-engaged Democrats seem to dislike the Bush-lite position.

I am not a Lieberman fan, but if he got the nomination I'd hold my nose and vote for him. I am wondering if this is a good strategy on his part. I know that, for the most part, we are the very engaged Democratic base, but are we out of touch with the voters on this one?

Based on my wife's reaction, no. But...I shudder to think we are wrong and Lieberman is right. Will the general public be turned off by candidates who bash Bush and who don't support this war?

I know there are currently a handful of threads that deal directly or indirectly with this subject, but I wanted to give you the reactions of one non-engaged Democrat. Any other anecdotes that support or refute Lieberman's assertations?

2. I heard Scott Ritter say on the radio the other day
in response to a question about which of the Democratic candidates could do a better job than Bush, he said anyone but Lieberman. Isn't Ritter a Republican?

I think Lieberman only gets high poll numbers because of name recognition. Once people actually listen to him (without Gore) more in upcoming events his numbers will really drop.

Ritter is a liberal. He spoke against the war at Chapman University.

5. I know all about his views on the war. He has this little book out.
With some guy named Will Pitt. Ever heard of him? :eyes:

I believe he is a registered Republican as well as a Marine and a former Weapons Inspector.

6. Ritter is not a liberal
He was against the war because he KNEW they had no WMD. But he is a Republican....he frequently reminds people he voted for Bush.

7. another view
When I brought my class to see Ritter speak at OU, he impresed me as an old-fashioned conservative. By today's standards, Nelson Rockefeller would be unacceptably far left, so that may add to an impression of Ritter as liberal.

Barry Goldwater would be considered a moderate.

He's all name recognition at this point. The telling fact is the trend, and his national numbers are dropping precipitously.

He'll get plastered in Iowa, come in a distant 3rd in NH, and either drop out of the race then or when he gets single digits in SC.

The only way Lieberman comes in 3rd in NH is if Gephardt has
dropped out by then. Otherwise, look for Lieberman in the
single digits (and I mean SINGLE DIGITS, as in "he
gets ONE percent").

11. Bush-lite is a guaranteed way to lose to an unpopular Dubya ...
because many of us will not vote for either. If the Dems can't offer a Dem, then I'm sure the Greens can offer a Green.

12. Very true...
There is an old political saying about getting the base fired up during the primaries and then going for the swing voters (or something like that).

If Joe can't get the base fired up now, how in the hell does he expect to win the general?
