Could Fitzgerald's appointment be a way to dump Cheney?
Cheney is the source of all disasters pending in the administration. The SCOUS could very well require the release of the Energy Task Force meeting data, even the sanitized version of that must be devastating. The spin on that will have to be magical, even for the masters at work in the administration, if there is discussion of an invasion of Iraq in there six months before 9/11.

The rumors were that the leaker was Scooter Libby, an if those rumors are verified by the Special Prosecutor it could be the nail in Cheney’s coffin. In my scenario Ashcroft just didn’t want to hammer that nail.

2. Dumping Cheney Would Bring Down the Entire Administration
I would think. No way. This investigation goes nowhere.

3. Who Would Decide That?
That's what I can't see. Who could dethrone Cheney? Certainly not the bush and I have my doubts that even Rove would step up against Cheney. So who would have his head that could actually deliver it?

5. You’re right that it’s a long shot.
But there still might be something to it. The DOJ does have the power to prosecute criminals even if they are rich Republicans. Maybe some clerk did the research on that hitherto fore obscure rule of law and let the new special prosecutor in on the findings. If Cheney’s Chief of Staff committed treason it would not reflect well on the VP himself, particularly since Cheney didn’t turn the criminal in his midst over when it would have been easy.

Who would oust Cheney? Maybe he’d resign. Maybe he would be replaced on the ticket. It is just a theory.

4. There must be --
--somebody out there whose boss attended the secret meeting -- somebody who is a secretarial assistant or what have you. And just possibly he or she kept a copy of the transcription of the meeting Minutes.

And for a handsome book deal and an interview on television, that he or she might be willing to shed a little light on what transpired at that hush-hush powwow.

If anyone out there is secretly raising a crocodile in their apartment, would you please turn it loose in Dick Cheney's kitchen?

6. I think it's Asscraft saving himself!
As much as I dislike Asscraft, I don't think he was involved in Traitorgate, so I think he's 'folding' so as to distance himself completely....

7. Cheney *IS* the administration.
He's not going anywhere until his pacemaker stops.
