New Penn Research... Dems more moderate than Repugs...
The new study showed that a plurality of Democrats are moderates, while a majority of Republicans were conservatives. Independents are larger than either party.

Republicans Democrats

6% Liberal 35% Liberal
25% Moderate 39% Moderate
63% Conservative 17% Conservative

45% of independents are moderates, 26% conservative, and 19% liberal.
The number of liberals and conservatives have grown slightly, but most Americans still consider themselves moderates. Moderate independents will play a huge role in the 2004 election.

2. This shouldn't surprise anyone
it's very clearly true and can be confirmed by simply watching a full day of C-SPAN, 1 or 2.

4. Do you happen to know how they arrived at this?
I'm wondering if they used something like that locator we've all tried here on DU--the site that asks a lot of questions and then sets you on a point somewhere along 2 axes? Or if these are self-identifiers--that is, that people called themselves "liberal" or whatever? I suppose it must have been closer to the former in order to have coherence... I'd love to know, however, how many people in the study were surprised about their own positions (if it was the locator).

Oh well, I don't mean to be a pest, but if you had a link? then I wouldn't bother you with silly questions.
:silly:
