Look at these snotty little college republicans
Edited on Wed Dec-24-03 02:52 PM by Skittles

Equating centries of minority oppression and struggle with a freaking cookie bake sale supposedly designed to demonstrate the "unfairness" of affirmative action. Gawd, it is beyond sickening.

They should be wondering how the fuck they got to where they are. Without affirmative action, I believe that not only minorities, but others as well would have been denied the opportunity for an education during the past generations.

Laugh, you stupid bastards.

55. Are you serious?
A small group of people get together and protest what they don't believe in and suddenly they are compared to a regime that gassed, murdered, tortured and tried to exterminate a group of people?

I am well aware of the Democratic platform on AA and I know it does not include calling those that disagree with it "nazis".

Why on earth would you relate them to nazis?

9. Affirmative action is one of the worst ideas in history.
Except for the alternative.

The best "bake sale" analogy for these Hitler Youth twits would be for a small minority of whites to wake up every morning with a great variety of free, fresh baked goods waiting for them. Of course, they have nothing to do with actually BAKING the baked goods - thats what the "little people" are for.

Most people would be able to buy their cookies - at inflated prices - from the first group, but only after they worked very hard for them. And the first group could take them away at any time for no reason.

And there's a third group for whom these treats are only an unfulfilled dream - like justice and a voice in government.

We got the popular vote and Gore is not in the White House. Whay exactly about this situation makes one claim that "we won"? I know all about the butterfly ballot and the felon purge but in case it's not obvious we don't have the executive branch, the senate or the congress in our hands. Sayoing "we won" may make some feel better but it just reminds me of the 11/00 gut wrench that I had when I woke up to go to work. Why keep dreaming when reality bites?

Never said it wasn't. What I said was that we didn't "win". The goal of winning is to have control of the seat and the people. We don't have that now do we. Stealing and winning have nothing in common in this case.

"YOU" APARENTLY didn't read what I wrote.

I consider a "win" where we get to move in to the WH and have our choice of staffers, apointees and all that goes with it. I'm well aware of the semanics of Gore "winning" but take a look at the occupant of the WH and look at the policies and staff running the show. Declaring a win is not the same as living a win.

28. And very poor businessmen
From the article:

"Organizers charge white students $1 for a cookie, while blacks and other minorities pay 25 to 95 cents. "

Black students should buy ALL the cookies for 25c each and sell them, at a table down the hall, to everyone regardless of race for 50c.

That way the Black students can send a positive message, double their money and drive the twits out of business.

Sadly, these two business geniuses will someday have their Dad install them into management positions.

59. Yes I can explain how they are racist
Typically this is how they sell their cookies:
White students are charged $1 for cookies while blacks and other minorities pay between $0.25-0.90 for the same cookie. Doughnuts are available to everyone except Asian-Americans and whites.

Since perhaps the greatest beneficiaries of AA are women of all races, the fact that these whiny miscreants even USE the race card to demonstrate what they perceive to be "unequal treatment under the law" when in fact in most universities, white people still out number other minorities by a landslide with a few exceptions, underscores that fact that they do not like AA because it interferes with what they perceive to be their "white privilege."

I know you will argue that point and that we don't agree on it and I'm not interested in humoring you today, but I at least felt you were owed an explanation...

Do women and minorities usually have it tougher? Yep.

Does that make one iota of difference as to who has the mindset and fortitude to actually rise above that kind of crap? Newp.

I see no evidence that these guys exhibit the tendencies that you are ascribing to them; it's just very convenient to jump all over them because they're white and in a (gasp!) fraternity.

My University's Young Democrats are considering having
a bake sale in retaliation to this.

We were thinking about having a bake sale where
everything is dirt cheap "because of the poor economy
under President Bush, near record job losses in one
administration, and the recent slash of university
budgets by the state (Texas) Republican Legislature."
or something to that effect.

YNGW...what does that mean?

Your posts seem to be a bit off. Why is that? I've seen you comment on a couple of threads and I am just curious as to your political affiliation?

Are you a Democrat, A Republican or an Independent? Maybe you're a Green Party member. Seriously, can you tell me which way you lean?

And before you ask, Speed reflects my love for racing, 80 is the year I met my wife, and 98 is the year I bought my house, hence Speed8098.

I am a staunch Democrat, which you will see if you read some of my comments.

Now...Your turn.

You have my sympathy regarding the loss of your 2 children, that's an experience that no parent should have to endure.

I'm a Democrat, though not as liberal as what seems dominant here at DU, but I've noticed that most DUers admit that this place is left of where the party is in general.

I tend to agree, we are farther left than most of the mainstream, but we enjoy our share of moderates leaning left. The only thing I hate to see is when our centrist friends fall for the rw talking points and then try to sway an opinion by spouting those same talking points.

I guess too much knowledge can sometimes be sort of a curse. I find myself questioning every word that comes from this mis administration. I don't believe ANYTHING that * says and very very little of what the rest of his minions spout.

If I offended you, I'm sorry, it was not my intention.
We have had a rash of disruptor's lately and I don't want to waste my time discussing issues with someone who really doesn't care.

I hope you and everyone here at DU is having an excellent Christmas and Hanukkah.
Again, thanks for your honest reply.

A "help the troops" sign, with the offer of having a signup sheet so they could have a recruiter call them. See how fast that gets attention. A special cookie that they have to take out of a box...obviously there would be no cookies in the box. Tell them they will possibly get it after serving.

Charge $2.64 (isn't that what Halliburton was charging for gas in Iraq?) for the each of the Halliburton cookies. For the students who think that $2.64 is too much for a cookie, sell them bags of crumbs for .20 each. After all, the average American is only getting crumbs from the Bush administration.

at my school pre-empted the republicans.

They heard that the republicans were going to sell cookies in this fashion in an attempt to protest "unfair" affirmative action programs in education.

The progressives set up a booth and gave cookies away, arguing that "a decent education for all youth regardless of race or class" should be freely avalible for any with the ability and will.

I think it's a good way to make the point.

37. I don't see the controversy?
These are college kids protesting. If kids can't protest in college, when are they ever going to? We sure did when I was in college.

Is it because you don't like their cause? Well too bad. That's what free speech is for. They can protest anything they want whether it's tasteful or tasteless or even peanut butter pecan crunch.

I don't see the controversy. Let them have their fun. Think of an even cooler idea and have a counter-protest the next week. It'll be fun for everyone and maybe some people who don't pay attention may even look in and learn something.

My favorite college protest when I was in college was some guy running for student government (not at my college) president and winning on the platform that if he was elected, he would spend the entire student budget on pink lawn flamingoes. He won and did it. I was editor of our college paper, and we did a story of it complete with pictures. The college said withn a week all the flamingoes had been stolen and were mostly in kids' dorms. That was stupid, no doubt, but it made the guys' point and was fun too. That's part of what college is for in my opinion.

40. Right to free speech?
I see two young people who are exercising their right to free speech to get their views across using nonviolent means, employing the use of a tangable object (the cookies) to help people see more clearly the concept of what is happening (discrimination based on race)

My biggest problem with affermative action is that it sends out the message "non-white people aren't good enough to get accepted to universities without special treatment" That in itself seems highly insulting to the dignity of the people it is targeting to supposedly help.

I am a firm believer in the notion that your life is what you make of it. I have a number of friends who are second and third generation citizens, whose parents/grandparents immigrated here from other countries with nothing but the clothes on their back and a small amount of savings that they managed to scrape together. Today every one of them is an outstanding, successful member of society. They didn't get to where they were because they sat around waiting for a handout and complaining about how unfair society is, they worked their *'s off and built a life for themselves.

If many of these so called "opressed minorities" would work even half that hard they wouldn't need a racially motivated handout such as affermative action. It doesn't take a wealthy baxkground to sit down with your textbooks every night and study like crazy to work for that scolarship.

Now, that is my personal belief and as I've indicated above everybody here has the right to disagree with it, HOWEVER you must also recognise that it is also the right of these two college students to stand up for what they believe in and protest what they see as an unjust practice.

44. you should be a firm believer in reality
do know how many minorities have tried to make it on their own and have been denied that right due to no fault of their own?
or how many people have been denied housing due to no fault of their own?
have wound up beaten, drug to death, lynched due to no fault of their own?
we didn't get in a position of needing affirmative action because white people behave themselves historically but because they don't. a lesson that actually doesn't seem to be lost on these two morons.
i don't have a problem with free speech -- i have a problem with speech that gets people hurt -- and ignorant speech like theirs accomplishes exactly that. and that's pretty much what i think of the fairy tale approach to your post.

To that I would respond: those are issues which should be tackled directly. If people are being denied housing based on race, attack that problem. If people are being denied the ability to 'make it on their own' as you put it, then attack THAT problem.

But what I see here with affermative action are people who are getting preferential treatment based solely on their race, and while some may say that it is for a good cause, it is still a way to divide people. When it comes to our educational institutes I believe academic merit alone should be used for judging one's candadacy for admission.

My biggest problem with affermative action is that it sends out the message "non-white people aren't good enough to get accepted to universities without special treatment"

Affirmative action does not mean that colleges admit minority students while more qualified white students are passed by. So, if your statement above reflects your understanding of affirmative action, you are mistaken.

The students in the photo are apparently similarly uninformed about affirmative action. I only hope they are not seniors so that there might still be some time left in their college careers for them to get informed.

They charge minorities less for cookies. What they should be doing is charging everyone the same price, but if they're down to the last brownie, sell it to a minority or female student instead of a white male. At least then they'd be accurately representing the situation they (and you) so despise.

At high-class universities like Yale, they have set aside some slots for children (and sometimes siblings) of graduates. If Joe was smart enough to graduate from Yale, so the thinking says, then Joe Jr. certainly must be smart enough. And if Joe Jr. graduates, obviously Joe III must be smart enough.

Please note that only one of the Bush twins, Barbara, is attending Yale. Jenna is attending the University of Texas.

What I want to know is how the village idiot got into Harvard Business School.

41. The republican party is puting a lot of emphasis on organizing these
bakesales at colleges and universities all over the country. It is part of a strategy to make the democratic party the minority party for at least another generation. The democratic party should counter this with a strategy of its own.

The republican bakesale analogy is flawed because it omits a period of time when it would be illegal or impossible for minorities to buy a cookie. Democrats should organize bakesales of their own where for the first 9 or 10 hours a sign is posted saying no minority may purchase a cookie and no white may purchase a cookie for any minority. The sign also should say that any white may force any minority to pay for a cookie for the white. During the last hour the sign should be removed and replaced with one saying that all whites must wait 60 seconds for a cookie but minorities need wait only 45 seconds.

Too bad the Republicans continue to lie, even to college students. Unfortunately, this is nothing new. The IHR (Holocaust deniers) do the same sort of thing, typically close to the end of the semester when the instructors and college administration officers don't have time to correct the misinformation before the students leave campus for winter or summer break.

Interesting that Republicans and Nazis use the same sorts of tactics, eh?

...is the fact that college students are actually doing it. Apparently affirmative action did not keep them from getting into college, so what exactly is their major complaint? Are they trying to say that if not for affirmative action, they would have gotten into an even better school? Unlikely.

And have you ever noticed that it's always white students primarily involved in stuff like this?

I won't apologize for stating right out that I think that their entire problem with AA has more to do with the fact that they are harboring racist feelings than some noble sense of fairness.

50. When this first appeared on DU
When this was first posted from the stunt down in Texas--an overly bright DU'er mentioned a 'brilliant' idea...

Have black students 'buy' the cheap cookies and then set up a table right next to them reselling the cookies and donuts, undercutting their price and essentially showing the ridiculousness of mixing labor supply and price demand, (apples and oranges...)

Or even still setting up a table and pricing the cookies according to workplace participation/supply...super cheap for whites and rare and not available for minorities under an 'ideal' Repuke solution where everyone is presumably equal...

Progressives could have fun with this...but wouldn't of course get the press coverage (esp a pix with their chosen candidate's campaign poster)

Jerk-offs

(I just used the spell checker and DU'er is NOT a word nor is Repuke???--)

Edited on Thu Dec-25-03 01:40 PM by Skittles
These two schmucks ignore CENTURIES of struggle and oppression and reduce their analogy to COOKIES. The sheer ARROGANCE and IGNORANCE boggles my MIND.

94. They have no historical sense.
I take that back- they just have no sense. Besides, I can't see how this bake sale illustrates anything about AA.

117. They suck.
A bake sale to support the ending of affirmative action. This is definitely beyond sickening.

130. Your post contains two false statements.
This makes me think you are being mendacious. You also imply that name calling is intellectually flawed, yet you do it in a sentence which includes name calling by you. This makes me think that you are an ignorant hypocrite.
