BBV: Diebold PR campaign to "restructure", but still no paper trail
Edited on Sat Dec-20-03 12:37 AM by TruthIsAll
Would they have announced this committment to compliance with certification processes if not for Bev and DU?

It's the start of their vaunted PR campaign. Wally O'Dell still wants to deliver Ohio for Bush...

Does DBD stock selling have anything to do with it?

Diebold Election Systems Announces Restructuring of Compliance and Certification Processes
December 18, 2003 10:34:00 AM ET

Compliance and certification officer position to be created

MCKINNEY, Texas, Dec. 18 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Diebold Election Systems, Inc. (DESI), is announcing a complete restructuring of the way the company handles qualification and certification processes for its software, hardware and firmware. This restructuring includes the creation of an executive-level position dedicated to meeting compliance and certification requirements. "We are committed to improving the effectiveness and efficiency of the procedures we employ to address certification issues, and to communicate with the respective governing and certification authorities and our customers," said Bob Urosevich, president of Diebold Election Systems.

Voting systems have evolved rapidly over the last few years to keep pace with new laws and regulations and to offer greater accessibility to voters. Notification and certification processes are often inconsistent between jurisdictions -- particularly as those requirements relate to upgrades to qualified and certified systems requested by customers.

"Our responsibility is to work diligently with our customers' governing bodies and the testing authorities to clarify existing processes and to eliminate any confusion that may exist -- and then to fully comply with those requirements," said Urosevich. "Our mandate is full compliance. I am confident the improvements we are implementing will enable us to meet this mandate."

The following actions will be taken immediately to improve compliance:

Creating Compliance and Certification Officer Position

Immediate Compliance Review of all Software, Firmware and Hardware

snip

Formalize Compliance and Certification Process

snip

Clarifying Notification and Certification Requirements with Customers and States

"Our intent in making these organizational changes is to ensure the public's confidence that all of our hardware, software and firmware products are fully certified and qualified by all of the appropriate federal, state and local authorities prior to use in any election," said Urosevich. "Helping ensure the right for all to vote reliably, privately and accurately, including the sight disabled, is of paramount importance to us. Electronic voting makes that possible, and we will continue to improve our processes and technology as we move forward."

1. window dressing
that's all this is. Companies reorg all the time, always in response to business/market pressure. But they do not yet have a sufficiently compelling interest in safeguarding our vote, IMO.

3. Well, the stock was down only $0.39
for the day.

What I found very interesting was on the message board they deleted half a dozen posts quoting the AP story about Diebold hiring felons.

Regarding the restructuring etc, typical move... Make it look more complex, describe new procedures over thousands of obscure pages, create a lot of smoke and hope that nobody has the time to examine the entire package... -CV

7. Well actually,
to short a stock, you borrow shares, them sell them with the idea of buying it back at a lower price and repaying the load of stock. Your profit is however much the stock went down.

Sorry, had to clarify that. <g>

8. Here's my take on this.
After issuing a cease and desist for publishing 24 memos documenting the use of unauthorized software, after a California audit revealed that 100 percent of Diebold’s machines used uncertified programs and California threatened to revoke the company’s right to do business in the state, after dozens of journalists including two documentary film producers and the AP wire covered this story, Diebold Election Systems President Bob Urosevich released a news statement:

“Diebold Election Systems, Inc. (DESI), is announcing a complete restructuring of the way the company handles qualification and certification processes for its software, hardware and firmware.”

I’m sure someone will slap me for saying this, but I’m reminded of the sociopath who discovers his conscience as soon as he goes to trial.

P.S. The most disturbing thing on this thread is Yahoo deleting those posts. The felon charges are documented out the ying-yang. I also noticed that the Google News Engine doesn't work properly for that story. It made 40 papers but Google only found about 3.

9. after all this how can any state seriously consider
going with Diebold for their voting machines?

There are other companies out there, and given this horrendous track record by Diebold you would think that any state board of elections or secretary of state would be scratching Diebold off the list of qualified vendors by now...

10. Bev, this is a concern
I also noticed that the Google News Engine doesn't work properly for that story. It made 40 papers but Google only found about 3.

Can you give me a few of the papers for which the story is not showing up in news.google? I'd like to do a little research.

11. Bev, your analogy is excellent....
They could still be a mess and "formally" follow the already pathetically weak qualification and certification procedures... That's not gonna do it... Don't know what's up with the Google search engine...
