DeeCee area snipers John Allen Muhammad and Lee Boyd Malvo were both convicted of capital murder. Jury recommended the death penalty for Muhammad and are getting ready to decide Malvo's fate. What do you think? Death penalty, life without parole, or life with the possibility of parole?

On edit: I beleive Virginia is number 2 behind (Our Great Leader's) Texas in the number of executions - and it does not seem to have influenced Virginia's murder rate. You would think someone would realize that the death penalty doesn't seem to work and needs to be reevaluated...

1. No idea
Probably life without parole, rather than parole, without having heard all the testimony given by the defense.

Death penalty is just barbaric, imo. Nothing warrants that.

2. You should repost this as a poll.
It would be interesting to see how many DU'ers would favor the death penalty for this person. My choice would be life without parole.

22. Make a post with a poll. It's on the choices when you post.
Scrub the first one and ask the mods to delete it. It's too late for this one now though because you can only do that in the first thirty minutes after the post.

5. no death penalty for juveniles
according to Amnesty International, there are three countries in the world that execute minors: Iran, the Congo, and the United States. We're keeping some good company there, huh?

I'm anti-death penalty for anyone but I get even more angry when I hear about the mentally ill or minors facing the death penalty. In this case, I have no doubt that Malvo was operating under Muhammad's influence and guidance, something that minors are more susceptible too.

Malvo should be punished for the crimes he committed. I do not believe he should be put to death. I think it's sickening we are one of the THREE countries that execute minors.

It is really sad how the American people could stand by and let this happen. The manipulation of the court system to railroad these guys is absolutely Kafkaesque.

15. To Railroad them
They have Malvo on tape confessing to the shootings and bragging about them. He only recanted once he realized that that recording would slam him in court. Good-Bye and Good Riddance. 2 degeneratges pieces of filth that will hopefully be gone soon.

7. My death penalty stance is this
a person should only get the death penalty if they have killed more than one person, *and* it is certain that they would kill again.

Even though lately I haven't seen much justice in this country, I hope the jury of his peers will decide what's right.

9. I am adamantly opposed to the death penalty even if they are a child
Edited on Fri Dec-19-03 12:57 PM by Bandit
 There are some here who would advocate for the death of a child. We are the only westernized nation that is so barbaric that we still have the death penalty. No other western country does. They also have a much lower murder rate than we do. Go figure. We teach that killing is good and we have a lot of killing here.

12. I think state-sponsored death is inherently evil
I don't care who's administering it, or why.

Imagine if the DMV was in the business of killing people. That's what the death penalty is about.

Ugly business, inhumane, uncivilized, and sends the message that "some killing is good".

Two wrongs don't make a right. The only time it's right to kill is in self defense.

Edited on Fri Dec-19-03 01:55 PM by Rowdyboy
The horror of the 25 years since then has changed my mind. These people set out to stalk and murder innocent civilians and were extremely sucessful. I see little to be gained by prolonging the evil they represent.

24. Life w/ possibility of parole
He is young and had a horrible family life when he was befriended and upheld Muhammad as a role model and parent figure. I don't believe that he was insane but very much under his influence. I wonder if the jury would have decided differently on the verdict or penalty if Muhammad had been his very controlling blood father instead of just emotionally. I am sure that if he were up for parole 20-30 years in the future that they would very much consider whether he has matured and was capable of being a productive member of society. If he was still deemed a threat, he'd stay in prision. I am anti death penalty and especially for children at the time of their crime. If anyone should get the death penalty, it is rich arrogant middle aged men who believed it was their right to kill someone they deemed inferior and had every reason not to turn to crime, not poor impressionale kids with bad family lives. The former are not executed. The latter often are.
