Guys - I had to share this!
A couple of weeks or so ago I posted about having contacted Ann Lewis at the DNC - really just out of the blue one day when I was outraged. (Uh, ONE day?!?!) I'd read this article in USA Today called "Liberals Finding their Voice - and It's Angry." Ann Lewis was quoted in the story as saying "we have been too nice. We have been too polite." I was gratified to see this. On a complete lark, I called information in Washington and got the DNC's number, and then her extension, and left a message. She called me back, and was receptive, and asked me to send her my ideas. I posted them here first - the ones about IGMFU and "The Party of Cain" ("am I my brother's keeper? Dems would say yes, certainly. Republi-CONS would say HELL NO! SCREW MY BROTHER! WHAT'S MINE IS MINE AND I AIN'T SHARING IT!"), and referring to the enemy as republi-CONS and republi-CON ARTISTS and painting their schemes as republi-CON JOBS and republi-CON GAMES. I mean, after all, they deride us and call us the Democrat Party every chance they get. I say we fight back, and fight back HARD, and when they punch us in the face, we kick 'em right in the nuts (preferably with spikes on our shoes). Went into some detail about it in my email to her, told her how I learned it from my dad who was a sales guy and a pretty effective one and sure knew his slogans and his repetitive ad campaigns, and I signed off with a giggle, "aka Betsy Buzzphrase".
Anyway, just this morning, here's the email Ann Lewis sent me...
Merry Christmas, 'eh?
I hoped to get back to you sooner but have been on the road and on the stump — First, you should know I love your approach. And you are absolutely right about how to get this kind of language into the atmosphere — Second this is the best-of-times worst-of-times season to begin: best of times becasue people are so much more focussed on political debate-and that interest will only grow as we get closer to the presidential election; Worst (or more challenging ) time because so muich attention goes to the presidential election, and the presumptive nominee will be assumed to speak for the party;his/her words willbe ssumed to be "the message" That doesnt mean we can't do more -a lot more -along te lines you suggest. Want to try to write a one page memo ( ok, 1and 1/2 pages) with your Guerilla Guide for surrogates? We are putting together material for surrogate speakers right now . I'm not sure if it will be one kit or several in different formats , but we might include some of your ideas . If you're interested: the DNC is shutting down and will not reopen until January 5th because we are moving offices, so you could send any time after that. Crhristie AGner, who is copied on this e-mail, is Executive Director of the Women's Vote Center, will actually be compiling the kits and can answer questions. Thank you again for following up —and for your great suggestions.
Love, peace, and SOLIDARITY!
