OK, discussion about trade
Edited on Mon Dec-15-03 12:27 AM by La_Serpiente
Would the current Democratic candidates adopt labor and environmental standards into their trade agreements if Nader didn't run in 2000?

Here was Gore's platform

Making a correction.

Link trade to environment and labor. (Sep 2000)
Fair trade: standards for child labor & environment. (Aug 2000)
Agrees with unions on 90% of issues, but not on free trade. (Mar 2000)
Open Europe & Japan to genetically-modified farm products. (Jan 2000)
Use Fast Track to encourage new markets. (May 1999)
Free and fair trade means economic growth and jobs. (May 1999)
Protectionism only protects us from prosperity. (Nov 1998)
China
Push Congress aggressively on China/WTO. (Mar 2000)
Supports permanent normal trade relations with China. (Dec 1999)
Supports MFN for China. (May 1999)
Speed up China’s access to WTO. (Nov 1998)
NAFTA + WTO
More Latin American trade, with labor & enviro protections. (Oct 2000)
Debate with Perot was instrumental in passing NAFTA. (Mar 2000)
WTO talks will continue, with labor & environment input. (Dec 1999)
WTO requires Japan & Europe to deal with our trade issues. (Dec 1999)
Open markets with safeguards for labor and environment. (Dec 1999)

He did want enviornmental and labor standards in the trade agreements.

5. I dunno. Do you think
that the Kyoto treaty would be dead if Nader didn't run in 2000?

Because trashing it wasn't in Gore's platform in 2000.

8. I think Nader woke them up, + we're 3 years further into the consequences
of NATFA and WTO...maybe people are really awakening to the fact we are getting crushed. Perot's big sucking sound sure came true!

10. Who can say but wasn't Gephardt fighting for that back in the 1990s?
From his campaign website:

Gephardt fought to include environmental protections in trade agreements. His efforts to include environmental provisions in NAFTA in 1993, and his constant pressure to do the same in "Fast-Track" foreign trade agreements in 1997 and 1998, paved the way for success when environmental issues were included in the core text of a trade agreement with Jordan in 2000.
