A few talking points for around the water cooler tomorrow...
Edited on Mon Dec-15-03 12:05 AM by bluestateguy
The war was supopsedly over when the statue came down on April 9th, and that was proven wrong.

"Major Combat" was declared over on May 1st by a triumphant flight-suit wearing George W. Bush, and that was proven wrong.

When Saddam's sons were killed in July we were told that the Iraqi resistence would fall apart, and that was proven wrong.

Let's just wait and see. We have been told 3 times that the war was "over", only to be sorely disappointed. If more soldiers continue to be killed the luster of this event will wear out very quickly.

3. When the subject of capturing SH comes up, I think we all should
immediately respond with:

How does that change the dismal situation in Iraq?

I hope Saddam Hussein tells us where the WMD are because that was the reason we invaded Iraq, right?

because of what I might say, not because of what my co-workers will say. Because when I hear, 'We should kill Saddam' or 'We should torture Saddam', I'm going to snap back, 'WTF did Saddam ever do to you? Your soft ass has been sitting safely in America and it is the Iraqi people who have suffered the atrocities. Therefore, I think that only the Iraqi people should make that decision, since they were the ones who lost their brothers, fathers, mothers, etc. to Saddam's regime.' Christ, the arrogance is going to do me in. Sure, we lost almost 700 Americans to both Gulf Wars, but the U.S. declared war on Iraq both times, and these wars happened due to failed U.S. policy, and our dependence on oil. In the meantime, the Iraqi people have suffered terribly both under Saddam's oppressive regime, and U.S. policy, and Americans are talking as if Saddam were their personal enemy. I love how events like this are staged solely for the amusement and benefit of the American people. Aren't we special?

"WTF did Saddam ever do to you? Your soft ass has been sitting safely in America and it is the Iraqi people who have suffered the atrocities."

With all due respect, can one only have an opinion on a foreign policy issue if it affects THEM? If that's the case than Hitler would have rolled over Europe -- and stayed there. What Hitler did to Germany didn't affect a soul in my hometown...no more than Saddam in Iraq. Bad argument - IMO.

We cannot win in 2004 being apologists for Saddam Hussein. No way.

11. Apparently he wasn't hiding, he was being held captive
I know a lot of DU'ers think Debka is a bunch of fanatics who don't know squat, and granted they are a wee bit extremist to say the least. However, there is an excellent article which explains the theory that Saddam has been held captive, some of the points they make being:

1. He had no communication devices

2. He could not get out of the hole without assistance from above

3. He was physically neglected, appearing to have been beaten and hungry

Debka speculates that Saddam was being held while the $25 million reward was being negotiated, or shall we say squabbled over. If you want to read more, or post this as a separate thread, the article is here: http://debka.com/article.php?aid=743

Anyway, there's something for the water cooler debate in the morning. Remember, with bush, things are rarely as they first appear to be. Also bear in mind it was just 2 or 3 days ago that Andrew Card commented that WMD was a moot point. They were just paving the way for Saddam's "revelation."

13. Here ya go
first this is a must read :
http://informationclearinghouse.info/article5378.htm

then here are my talking points, well
a letter to the editor that I sent out
today .

167 billion dollars 437 American Soldiers lives
spent to get an Evil Evil man

based on LIES about WMD coming in the form of a mushroom
cloud . Yes, send Saddam to the hague it's a good thing .
Yes Saddam was Evil Tortured his people , but that is
not why we were told we went to war .

120 dictators such as Saddam are in power in the world
right now . What are our Plans for these Dictators
Especially in Saudia Arabia and Pakistan. Which our
Govermnet calls allies ?

Are We prepared to be consistant with this ?
Or is Saddam the only one that we are going to take out ?

Meanwhile 2 percent of Cargo ships are checked coming into our
ports . ABC news was able to smuggle WMD into the port
of Los Angles a few weeks ago .

The Fourth Amendment is still null and Void

The taliban is still regrouping in Afgan.
Heroin is still a bumper crop for warlords there .

The evironmental Safety Standards are still being rolled back

Veterans Benefits are still being cut

Overtime pay is still gone for Millions of Americans

Anti American Companies still not supporting America
through tax dollars are still getting Government National
Security contracts.

More National Guard and Reservist Troops are on foreign
soil than ever before in our history .

I honestly believe that had bush just said "Hey Saddam is
horrible we want to help the Iraqi people" that the
world would accepted it . And far more allies would of
joined us . The way bush went about it was a mistake and
it's still costing Americans both in tax dollars and
in Soldiers lives more than it ever should have .

Totally agree. But, * used the "bait and switch" routine. He went for the "fear" factor...WMD.

That kind of lying I can never forgive.

14. So we fixed an eight month old fuckup; so what?
Edited on Mon Dec-15-03 12:52 AM by PurityOfEssence
Had we done it right off, we might have had more willingness to collaborate. Now things are a wreck, and the opposition factions have had time to organize.

That's an easy one to understand...

Beyond that, the administration has already spoken out on this, and all they can say is that they don't know what's going to happen next. They caution about more violence, but the don't know a damn thing. They certainly don't know anything they're willing to stick their neck out about. They don't know. Pre-emptive attacks premised upon pure ignorance are all they can offer us.

17. The capture changes *nothing*. The U.S. is no more welcome in Iraq...
than it was before the capture. We are not wanted there. We do not belong there. The killing will not stop just because of the capture.

We bombed the living sh** out of North Vietnam, and it did not break their resolve. It's impossible to bomb (or capture) an idea -- you might as well chase smoke.

18. Thanking God I work alone!
I work 11am-7am all by myself! No one here to annoy me, but me.

I'm not in the mood to deal with the Pukes now. Oh sure I got the ammo to throw at them, but just don't want to deal with them right now. Plus, we all know they don't listen to reason anyway.

Although I gotta say I was expecting a bigger "bounce" for Chimpy in the polls that are out today after the capture.
