Dean just said in SF that Saddam's capture
doesn't change his opinions about Iraq one bit. That's a relief because it doesn't change mine either.

2. Exactly
Especially since the reason we just HAD to invade was because of the WMD's that they still have yet to find.

7. I've heard Saddam is already saying he didn't have WMDs
... that the "U.S. dreamt them up" in order to go to war. This could all backfire big time on Shrub ...

9. While I think that Bush lied
about WMD, I hardly think that anyone can rely on Saddam's denial as proof that none existed.

14. You're missing my point
I think Saddam is likely telling the truth about this particular issue. But that's because I'm already convinced that Bush lied and there were no WMD - I don't put any independent credence into anything Saddam says. But it's going to take a lot more than the word of Saddam Hussein to convince many people that he had no WMD. Anyone who has not yet been convinced that Bush lied is not going to take the word of Saddam Hussein as conclusive proof of anything. And the last trap the Dems need to fall into is telling people that Saddam is a reliable source.

not, "Well, Saddam says there weren't any so that's good enough for me."

19. True. But his scientists said that all along, even those
who hated Hussein.

They kept saying this to the U.N.

It didn't matter. Chimpy wanted this war.

24. Where are they? Where are they? Let's not be naive.
WMD never existed. It was a lie and the capture of SH will prove this. Who's lying? SH or GWB? My bet is on GWB.

4. Huzzah
I thought I was the only one. I think his capture will equal exactly NADA in that region with the exception of a general, and short lived, morale boost.

6. Yes, he said it to great applause
What a great event it was. Very positive, and the music (David Crosby, Bonnie Raitt) was phenomenol.

Afterwards we met Sean Penn, and later met Bonnie Raitt.

Good time all around. Will try to post pics later.

15. If anything...
..if it turns out Saddam speaks truth regarding that there is no WMD, it will make the US look like a bunch of barbarians.
However, the Bush PR team will spin this capture non-stop.

17. What does Sadaam have to lose now
that he is in custody. Might even make a deal to keep from embarassing/charges against a few people in high places. You never know how this all is going to play out. So far everything Bush and company has done has come back to bite them in the butt, soon there will be nowhere to bite.

18. What are they going to try him on?
Edited on Sun Dec-14-03 11:06 PM by liberalmuse
I mean, he was a rather nasty dictator, but rather nasty dictators don't seem to bother most of our Presidents and foreign policymakers all that much. They still deal with them and support them with our tax dollars. Hell, they helped many of them come into power or at the very least, strenghthen it.

If the Bush administration puts him on trial, then how are they going to justify allying themselves with other leaders who torture, maim and kill their own citizens in the thousands?

Iraq has no WMD's. Saddam complied with the U.N. inspections, and he hasn't waged war on any of his neighbors since '91.

The Bushies blew it big time. What are they going to do now? The pictures released of Saddam are nothing short of pathetic. It looks more like Bush dug up Jerry Garcia instead of capturing a man who in numerous speeches was deemed as the epitome of evil. This is going to backfire, BIGTIME.

On edit: Dean has made all the right moves through all of this and I look forward to reading a transcript of the speech he is giving tomorrow. GO DEAN!!!

And once again I'm proud of him for speaking the truth no matter what rightwing guttersnipes or democratic fence-sitters try to taunt him into dishonesty, or lessen his resolve.

26. Why would it?
Eventually Saddam was going to be found, "dead or alive." No Dem's campaign is based on Saddam or Osama's capture.
