Who All Would've Voted for MARIO CUOMO in '92?
I was too young to be interested in politics then, but I've heard that the nomination would've been handed to him on a silver plate had he run in either '92 or '88. Any DU'ers that would've voted for him instead of Clinton or one of the others? Do you think he would've beaten Bush? What kind of President would he have been?

1. Judging by his governorship of NY I definitely would have
a strong, principled and worthy Dem.

I would have voted for him but....I was only 9 at the time

2. In 88 probably not
I really, really liked Simon and almost certainly wouldn't have switched. In 92 though I waited until after Cuomo had decided to fully support Tsongas.

3. In a heartbeat.
I don't know the nomination would ever had been handed to him, and suspect all that "Hamlet on the Hudson" meandering was him trying to line up nationwide support-- and not getting enough.

I voted for him for Governor every time, and would gladly have supported him for President.

What kind of President would he have been? Who knows? I would like to think one of the great ones, but sometimes intelligence and principles get in the way of the job that has to be done.

Ask Carter about that.

4. I would have
And proudly voted for him in New York...

I think he would have beaten Poppa Bush....but I think it would have been an even uglier campaign than the one the scum of the earth waged against Clinton. Even when he wasn't a candidate the WSJ editorial page featured a daily "mafia" slur.....

Incidentally, Dan Quayle's "potatoe" fiasco was at least partly due to Super Mario...Cuomo had given an elegant and eloquent speech in early October to Wall Street executives about why Republican economic policies were so disastrous...and Dan had been given a carefully crafted rebuttal attacking "Cuomo's welfare state" that Bill Kristol had written for him.

It was on the way to deliver that speech, with the press corps in tow, that the Quayle entourage stopped for a photo op where the Hoosier Hotshot was supposed to pose quietly with the winner of a fifth grade spelling bee.. Alas, Dan couldn't resist showing off his spelling expertise in public, and suddenly none of the assembled press corps seemed to care what the speech Kristol wrote for him had to say.

5. I worked under that jerk when he fucked up HUD
After he finished with us, we had to change from Hud, to DUH!

He's like smirk, completely out of touch with the real world. Another dlc/puke. Joe's twin brother, far as I'm concerned.

6. On the subject of out of touch
that was Andrew Cuomo. It would be nice to know what on God's green earth you are talking about when you decide to chasitise others as being out of touch.

10. Wasn't that the son?
I thought it was a younger Cuomo who ran HUD, not the former Governor of New York, Mario Cuomo.

7. As a NY'er....
I would have been proud to cast my vote for Mario.

He was the brightest and best Democratic statesman of his time and it killed me that he didn't run in '84 or '88

9. I have heard him say it was bad timing
What I recall is him saying that he had to chose between going on the road and working for the nomination or satying in Albany and getting the budget passed. I would have voted for him in a moment. He is the most well-spoken politician I have ever encountered.

12. me me me
He is a great Democrat and I think we would have had a much better country if he'd been President. But I don't know if he could have beat Bush, that southern thing.
