Is Dusty Baker a racist?
Dusty's mouth has gotten himself in trouble before but now he's gone and said this...

''It's easier for most Latin guys and it's easier for most minority people because most of us come from heat. You don't find too many brothers in New Hampshire and Maine. Right?

''We were brought over here for the heat. Isn't that history?'' Baker said.

''Your skin color is more conducive to heat than it is to the lighter-skinned people. I don't see brothers running around burnt,'' he said. ''That's a fact. I'm not making this up. I'm not seeing some brothers walking around with some white stuff on their ears and noses.''

Here is a link to the entire story: http://www.boston.com/dailynews/186/sports/Baker_warms_up_to_summer_at_Wr:.shtml

Now...If a hockey manager said something like...

"You don't see any of the brothers playing hockey because they can't handle the cold"

...He would be THROWN OUT ON HIS ASS WITHIN HOURS!

Will the same happen to Dusty? Is Dusty a "Racist"? Would the hockey coach be called a "Racist"? Is there a difference between what Dusty said and my hockey coach example? Is there a double standard in America?

1. Uh, you DON'T see 'brothers' walking around w/white stuff.
Edited on Tue Jul-08-03 02:56 PM by tjdee
It's not racist because he's talking about himself and other black people/minorities. There's nothing deragatory in the comments, it's just declarative, really. You DON'T see black people walking around with sunscreen on their noses (you don't really see anybody else either, but...)

"Various other cells besides the melanocytes produce a range of other pigments, and the thickness of the skin also modifies skin color, but melanin is the main player. It ranges in color from yellow to black. But more important than its role as a color agent, melanin protects the human body from ultraviolet light."

I don't know if that's the reason Africans were used as slaves though.

If Dusty Baker said something like, "white people can't handle the heat because their skin is inferior", that would be racist.

5. Africans were used
because they were resistant to European diseases. It had nothing to do with resisting heat.

And as far skin pigment, blacks may not get sunburn, but that doesn't have much to do with withstanding heat.

12. Resisting disease was one such reason
but dealing with the extreme heat did come into play.

Read about Butler Island slaves. They cultivated the rice paddies in South Carolina.

14. Blacks and tans
I had a black GF at one time and she got in a bet with another friend over who would tan the most. Everyone thought she was joking of course as she was not lite skinned to begin with, but she persisted and the race began. Both people placed tape around their wrists for a week. Then proceeded to go about their business. After a week the tape was removed. My GF won easily. The change in skin tone was significant.

The reason most people do not realise this issue is because blacks undergo more of a shading shift. So called white people take on more color when they tan. This makes their change more readily apparent.

but I have seen black people wearing sunscreen. This may shock you, but some blacks are very light-skinned.

18. I've had two different "Dark Skinned" black friends...
...and both of them burned. Not as badly as me, and it was hard to see, but after a day at the lake we'd all come back and be VERY sore that evening.

3. Racist? I doubt it. Moron? Yes.
Yeah, there is a double-standard, but both of those comments, Dusty's and your hypothetical hockey coach's, have no scientific evidence to back them up, and that's what makes them idiotic.

Dusty managed to just barely skate the line by not coming out and saying that whites were inferior. So, his comments are relegated to the moron category.

Racism is a sincere belief in the absolute superiority of one genetic group over another. In this day, it would be awfully hard to hold those thoughts when you're exposed to those other races all the time, although some, like John Rocker managed to pull it off.

11. Simple
Racism is a belief that certain races are inherently inferior/superior to other races. If you believe that blacks are inherently inferior (or superior) to people of other races, then you are a racist, even if you are also black.

10. NOPE and yes there is a double standard. . .
He admitted as much. Dusty said something stupid and idiotic, but it was not racist. The thing that gets him of the hook is that he is Black. He also acknowledged that he could say it because he was Black, he then went on to say that he could not say anything about white guys, Jews, Germans, Italians, et al. He was talking about his own. If a white hockey coach were to say it about Black players that would be a problem. If Dusty said something about white guys that would be a problem.

45. Well, no one calls me one because I'm not a knee-jerk reactionary
Who posts race baiting threads like this and then throws a hissy fit whenever someone dares to call him on it.

It's not like its anything new from you. You act like this anytime someone doesn't agree with your opinion on something race-related, spewing invective and calling names. If you want to reduce my calling you on your childish behavior "stalking", then so be it. All I know is I'm the one who's doing this in a calm and rational manner, and you're the one pounding away at the keyboard with a large unseemly vein pumping away furiously in your forehead.

In the sentance where he mentioned:

"It's easier for most Latin guys and it's easier for most minority people because most of us come from heat. You don't find too many brothers in New Hampshire and Maine. Right?"

They left this out of the last sentance:

"You don't find too many brothers in New Hampshire, Maine and the Upper pennisula of Michigan. Right?"

Dont forget to give the U.P some props!!! It already is the bastard pennisula of Michigan, they dont have to leave something this big out!!
