Edited on Wed Dec-10-03 04:54 PM by DoveTurnedHawk
I am one of the proud hosts/sponsors/organizers of a Friday, December 26 fundraiser, with the General himself in attendance!

:bounce:

If you're in town and interested in attending, there are two tiers: cocktails from 6:30 - 8:00 PM for a $250 contribution, and a general appearance from 8:00 - ??? PM for a $100 contribution. Please PM or e-mail me at doveturnedhawk ("at" symbol) yahoo.com if you'd like more information and/or would like to RSVP!

30. Thanks Salin!
I doubt I'm ever going to be any great shakes in the political world, though, I'm just trying to do my part to help my candidate.

Unless he goes nuclear on Clark, I plan on doing the same for Dean if he wins our nomination (to the extent the existing campaign apparatus would even want my help, anyway, as I'm sure they've already got a well-oiled machine up and running). :-)

33. I am not in any one camp
unless one counts the... in order to win - we have to mobilize the grass roots like NEVER before... we have to become the "apparatus" that responds to the gross spending advantage of bush - and the inevitable slimy campaigning (from push polls, to media blitzes filled with inaccuracies, to the rwing echo chamber on tv and radio). I believe it CAN be done - but I don't think that most people realize what that will mean on a community by community level. It means that the several hours a week I have volunteered to past campaigns for phonebanking, mail stuffing and some door to door work - won't be enough. It means bringing others who haven't volunteered in the past along to do so - and at the local level having meaningful actions/activities for the volunteers so that we can get the message out - one on one - and fight the good fight.

I think we can mobilize around any candidate. I think only a couple of candidates have begun to build the infrastructure to more effectively tap into this energy - and be willing to decentralize some of the local campaigning efforts in a way to make a different kind of campaign structure than in past years. Less formal - more nimble- a little more dangerous (less control) - but a lot more effective and broadbased. But even if those candidates (in my read Dean and Clark) don't take the nomination - they will likely give other candidates such a 'scare' that those campaigns will quickly realize the power of such a campaign structure and adapt/adjust (or so I hope).

My belief in this as the prerequisite for ANY democratic candidate to beat bush - is what fuels my frustration at not just the candidate wars - but the active dissemination of vitriol at such a level that there are camps for each candidate that claim that they would never support a different specific candidate... and the back and forth that just deepens the divide at a visceral, very ugly level. IMO, this threatens our ability to beat bush to a great extent - but perhaps it is an indication of a bigger reason that threatens our ability to beat bush.. folks lack of recognition that campaigns and strategies HAVE to change from the past in order to compete with the GOP of today - and that this requires commitment and activity from each of us - that is very unlike the past - and is much more than "going to a voting booth and holding my nose." Much, much more. To a great extent, imo, we really do hold the ability to take this back - but it will take a lot more work than those fueling the intracandidate animosity seem to recognize - or they might tone down and recognize the long term damage they are feeding into that will harm their candidate (were he to get the nod) and any candidate who gets the nod. But what else is new - folks don't seem to want to take responsibility for their own actions.

Wow... wasn't expecting to go into that rant... but there it is...

I do believe we are on the same page - and I hope the fundraiser is a great success!
