UAW about to pull the plug on its liberal talk-radio network

I. E. America Radio,the United Auto Workers-owned national radio network that was a multimillion-dollar attempt to offer liberal talk in a broadcast world dominated by conservatives, is going out of business early next year.

Mike Malloy's show was the highest rated show in the market when he was on WLS-AM in Chicago.

He was NOT let go for lack of ad revenue!!! He was let go because station management would not tolerate his liberal voice.

And since that time they have never even come close to recovering their position in that time slot.

Liberal radio can and will survive, and in fact, it will be a growth industry, I predict.

speaking of whom, I always love to repeat this little run-in he had with Garry Wills:

And while I wish it was as simple as an ideological disagreement, the fact is that without ad revenues NO radio program is gonna last. That's not to say that political sentiment isn't a factor in a station manager's decision to keep a program or not, but it's only one of many. The decisive factor is always filthy lucre.

I do radio spots for one of the most amazing Democratic talk radio talents out there and believe me, it's a daily fight for him to even stay on the air in a conservative market (Utah).

People rave about NPR too, but most of it sucks..

The "hard-edged" rightwing stations NEVER go "mooshy".. They use machinegun programming,., "Liberal" radio tries to be too esoteric and "above it all"..

I hope the Gore and AnShel people are paying attention.
The gentle approach will NOT carry the day..

If a station has 24 hours to fill, they better have a seamless presentation of many hosts, all on the same subject.. They need to have programming that will be available , no matter what time a listener tunes in..

People do listen to radio, but they want more than feng shue, and garden talk, and pet doctor, and Dr Dean Edell and the car guys and the computer guys..

If they plan a liberal station, then BE liberal..all the time..

Shame on the UAW too, for not turning IEAmerica into a LABOR discussion..day in and day out.. It's not like there has been a lack of stories to cover..

Damn! This is bad news. The Left cannot sustain any radio programming for long. Why? I know why! Lack of funds. Time after time Left-leaning radio dies for lack of funds. We have listeners but we cannot raise funds thru advertising on radio stations owned by the Right with Right-Wing shows on most of the time. I guess we need to own the stations and I know there is an ongoing effort by a Liberal group to buy some but its tough folks, really tough. When Liberal talk-shows are on, please support them any way you can. This is soooooo disheartening.
