He did emerge from no were to democratic front runner in 6 months. He was a fringe candidate at the begining of the year, and now is leading them all. He is raising more than any other dem, and while other campaigns have floundered or never taken off, Dean's is sky rocketing. Could DU, and other dem groups not organize an internet campaign to get Time to name Dean the Man of the Year????? Would this work? Next year's man of the year will be who ever wins the election. Why shouldn't this year's man of the year be the one who emerges as the dem front runner?

1. I like your idea...

But I have no idea if Time accepts "votes" on this.

Of course, if they name Dean, they'll be accussed of being part of the "Liberal Media" blah blah blah.

Trying to think who else might be a contender, and Dean's the one who's cast the biggest shadow this year, which I think is their main criteria.

Or they could go with the safe bet: Bush... or maybe one of their "joint" winners like Bush and Saddam.

It'd be cool if they went with Al Franken... :)

2. When Time named George Bush II The Man of the Year
I went nutz. After an election like 2000, the last thing Time magazine should be doing is endorsing such a divisive figure.

3. actually, it isn't an endorsement
as much as i despised that choice, Time has been consistent. their "person of the year" isn't about politics, ideology, etc...

they pick the person who had the greatest "impact" on everyday people. Bush* DID impact everyday people whether you love him or hate him.

they had Hitler on the cover for exactly the same reason.

its the "impact" not the politics. my vote (based on the above) might actually be Wolfowitz (if you can stomach that). HE certainly "impacted" a shit load of Iraqi's this year :eyes:

5. Exactly ....
I wouldn't be surprised if "Man of the Year" was the unfound WMD.

6. Time's MOTY cover is NOT a "good citizen" award. It means...
that the person covered is the biggest news story of the year. Hitler has been on the cover, as has Kruschev.

7. It became wimpy when Giuliani got it instead of Bin Laden

9. The other problem with Giuliani
being named Man of the Year was that he was that in NYC only. Those of us outside NYC didn't exactly consider him MOTY. Doesn't mean we weren't appalled and saddened by what happened, but a paranoid control freak isn't my idea of MOTY. Of course, as Calvin Trillin puts it, sometimes a paranoid control freak is exactly the right person in a crisis.

10. How about we focus on getting him elected?
The time magazine thing is bullshit. A stupid diversion. Get him elected then we'll talk about magazines.

11. Bush for sure
the most divisive man in the world. What could be more deserving than that? It's not a popularity contest, you know. It just refers to the most newsworthy person in the news that year.

Time's had precedent, too.

Hitler was Man of the Year twice.

12. Good idea
New Hampshire will be so sick of his face by the primary that Kerry will easily win in the mounting Dean backlash.
