The slam dunk Democratic ticket is Dean/Clark or Clark/Dean. The writing is on the wall, but things can always change...and usually do!
To win as the Sole Survivor, you must lie, cheat, steal, whatever...keeping in mind that, in the end, the winner is chosen by the "also rans".
Imagine a Democratic Convention in the summer where two big names are in a close contest. One is favored, the other is gracious but outspoken. Then, just before the nomination, there is a moment when most (not all) of the former candidates come onto the stage. They sit down and listen to the two remaining candidates.
The last two survivors make a speech that says that the winner will be President and the loser will be VP! The crowd roars as they shake hands.
Then, one by one, the former candidates come up and endorse the decision to collaborate and throw their hat in the ring.
Cheers! Drinks! And pundits with nothing to say.
Then, the nomination. And, whoever wins, they get up and make announcements:
"I'm asking all those in congress to stay there and work hard for us all. I'm asking Braun to be Secretary of Interior. I'm asking Kucinich to be Labor Secretary..." yada yada. He names all of the candidates as a part of a united team. Why, wouldn't it be a coup if he said he was offering the position of Secretary of State to Powell, because he believe in Powell, and believes that the US needs some consistency in relating with other nations. "Powell has made some mistakes, as well all do from time to time, but he has America's best interests always."
(Powell would probably reject the offer, but what a coup! Talk about a uniter, not a divider. Talk about reaching over to the Republicans with an olive branch.)
My own particular preference is for the Democratic Convention to mimic the set of Survivor!, putting a modern face on the party, while poking fun at itself and politics, and having the chance to leap forward in effective marketing. Old school politics, like protests, speeches, and debates just don't have the same impact any more. The future is in using TV and the media to your advantage.
Go ahead. Flame me to pieces. I just thought this sounded like a good idea.
