My roomate is originally from Michigan and he doesn't like her. He's Republican and watches Collin Quinn!!! however, all he does is play video games all day. I have to put up with a lot of crap.

Anyhow, how is he? How did she beat Spencer Abraham? Who supports her in the state?

I like what I see in her.

1. Michiganian here
Sen. Stabenow is very popular here -- maybe not as highly-rated as Carl Levin (who is undefeatable -- the Repubs don't even offer up serious competition against him any more).
She reminds you of the nice neighbor lady who bakes cookies for the kids. This and a whip-smart political mind makes her a winner for as long as she chooses to serve.
Her supporters, like most statewide Dems, include minority and urban voters (save Grand Rapids and Traverse City -- which tend Repub) and labor unions.
John
Your roomie may not like her. I'd suggest he get used to her, because she'll be around for awhile.

7. I;m a New Yorker, but
I got to meet her in January at the Democracy Radio conference.

She was very impressive when she spoke to those in attendance. And i got to meet and talk to her for a while at the dinner afterwards.

It was funny that after talking media all day long, Ms. Stabenow and I stood around and talked about the blues. She's smart, she's tough, and she's a very nice lady.

12. Detroiter agrees.
She does not overpower people. She's a natural.

The race against Spencer Abraham was close. There were tons of commercials, tons. She was new, but elegant. You meeting her is the same as Michigan having met her prior to electing her.

Abraham was known, but pathetically unremarkable. Typical of a Republican he would vote to hurt thousands of people and then find a photo-op helping a couple to a dozen individuals. Despite a good PR advertising team, they could not make the open-shirt walking-fast commercials stick to the 350 pound? glutton incumbant Abraham. Republicans resorted to, "He's really a nice guy." in order to justify voting for him.

The combination of Abraham's situation and Stabenow's natural abilities lead her to win an amazingly close race.

8. I like her!
She's a fighter.

She won by holding the base together, while appealing to moderate female voters in the suburbs. It's a winning formula in Michigan, it worked for Clinton and Gore, and it worked for Granholm. No reason to think it won't work for our nominee in '04

9. Debbie is super
Like our wonderful Gov, Debbie is smart, articulate and hated by repugs because of it. Dems love her.

11. Michigander here
I've had the pleasure of dining with the Senator and she is great. She comes off as so soft spoken and genteel but she is smart as a whip. Great sense of humor too.

She fought long and hard to beat back ol' Spence and the GOP smear machine and they will come after her real hard in '06. She gets lots of support from my region (northern lower MI). I happen to be working on hosting a fundraiser in late January for her as we speak.

Don't be fooled by her gentle ways, she's mighty sharp.

Julie
