Dirty Bomb Missles Reported Missing in Moldova
Edited on Mon Dec-08-03 09:10 PM by La_Serpiente
Isn't this what the Democratic nominees have been talking about? Fearful of terrorists stealing or taking radioactive bombs form Russia or any other ex-sattilite Soviet country in Eastern Europe and Central Asia???

'Dirty Bomb' Missiles Reported Missing
Mon Dec 8, 1:53 PM ET

By VASILE BOTNARU, Associated Press Writer

CHISINAU, Moldova - Dozens of rockets outfitted with so-called dirty bombs — warheads designed to scatter deadly radioactive material — appear to be missing in a breakaway region of Moldova, an expert said Monday.

Oazu Nantoi, a political analyst who works at the non-governmental Institute for Policy Studies in Chisinau, said he had seen photocopies of Russian military documents showing that the dirty bomb warheads — 24 ready to use, 14 dismantled — were missing from a storage depot near the Trans-Dniester Tiraspol military airport.

Nantoi is a respected expert on the region of Trans-Dniester, which is populated by ethnic Slavs and has been policed by thousands of Russian troops since the region's fight for independence from Moldova 12 years ago. Moldova has strong ethnic and cultural links to neighboring Romania.

3. Trans-Dniester has been an arms-trafficking no-man's-land for a while now

Utterly lawless. Bad news.

on edit: Peter Landesmann wrote an article for the August 17 2003 New York Times Magazine, "Arms and the Man," about the world's biggest arms dealer, Victor Bout. He discusses Trans-Dniester.

"But Trans-Dniester is more than just the Wal-Mart of arms trafficking. Experts are concerned that terrorists -- or ambitious middlemen -- could find more sophisticated and dangerous things to buy. The Soviet military couldn't guarantee that all of the nuclear weapons had been removed. And hundreds of canisters of cesium-137, used by Soviet scientists to test the effects of nuclear war on plants, are unaccounted for. According to Russian documents I obtained, one 14th Army officer warned the Moldovans that in 1992 24 Alazan rockets in Trans-Dniester had been tipped with radioactive warheads. An adviser to British intelligence confirmed that some of the cesium is still inside Trans-Dniester."

4. Huh, that's funny.
I thought the only "dirty bomb" ever known to have been made was made recently by the US. For "simulation" purposes.
