Massey energy is an evil, evil company that treats the state like a 3rd world country and is the leading proponent of the environmentally destructive mountaintop removal process. Its use of public facilities for its pr events has been the subject of criticism from many activists.

Picnic
a boon for Logan
Massey event may be largest
in county history, official says

Friday July 25, 2003; 10:00 AM

Logan County officials anticipate a million-dollar economic benefit from hosting a picnic this weekend of 25,000 Massey Energy employees, the largest gathering the county's top economic developer can remember.

"I'm not sure we've ever had an event this large in the county," said Rocky Adkins, the director of the Logan County Development Office.

Hotels were booked from Logan to Charleston for the private event that starts Saturday. Massey Energy has invited all of its employees and their families to the picnic at the Logan School complex on Midelburg Island.

Last year, a similar event at Charleston's Magic Island drew both throngs of people and criticism. Thousands of people came to the picnic, but Massey Energy was sued by people who believed the event's location in a public park meant it should be open to the public.

1. Just what IS it with country singers
almost always being RW freeper nationalistic jingoistic anti-environmental screw-the-people repukes, anyway? One of the many reasons why I'm glad I don't like country music, lol (apologies in advance to those of you who do like it).

2. We always have
Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, Rosanne Cash, Kathy Mattea, the Dixie Chicks, Emmylou Harris, and now even Merle Haggard on our side.

So screw Dwight. I always liked his music a bit, until now. Didn't he at one time try to pass himself off as sort of liberal? I could swear he played at a democratic event or two in the past.

4. Abandoned his horses to BURN
in a Malibu fire a few years back.

A friend's wife was part of the rescue crew.
The fire was threatening the entire area and the evil one
abandoned his property leaving his horses locked in the
barn to die in the fire- didn't even take the time to let them go
to run away. Just left them to die.
What an ASSHOLE.

5. Thanks for sharing that.
I have bought a some of his music but I sure never will again, this is even worse to me than playing that gig. I hope the horses were okay, I'd like to hear more about this, like how did the rescue crew find out, I could not tell from your post whether they died or were rescued.

8. As far as I know-
The horses were all rescued- but certainly not
with help of their owner.
I heard the story second hand but in essence,
someone told the animal rescuers, who work every
fire in that area, that Mr. Tightpants was seen high tailing it
out of there, and that there were horses kept on the property.
The rescue team went to investigate the tip and were
thoroughly outraged and disgusted to find that he
had not even taken the time to undo the barn doors
to at least give them a fighting chance to survive.

Some people should not be allowed to have children or animals.
As a horse lover myself, I find the story completely hideous and am
ashamed to think he was born in the same state as myself.
No real Kentuckian would ever abandon horses in a fire.

No Way!

6. Where to place the blame
should not be with the performers, as their booking agents most likely did not know ahead of time of the circumstances before signing a contract for this event. Advertising, and publicity with their names were probably sent out long ago so backing out by the performers could have financial consequences for them if they DO NOT play.

Artists often play corporate events for $$$. The list of artists playing corporate gigs include everyone from the Eagles, Bob Dylan, and the B-52's. Hell I know personally that Wisconsin Electric Co booked Three Dog Night one year. I don't see how boycotting the artists will help the fight vs. Massey Energy. It would hurt those who work for Dwight Yoakam for example, like his band & road crew. I doubt Dwight is GOP either, as he has refused to play by Nashville's rules living his life in LA. He also started playing in clubs in LA with bands like the Blasters & Los Lobos. Just my $0.02. If you have proof of his support of the GOP, I'd love to see it. Then I'd consider some type of boycott.
