Impeach Bush signs .... IN BAKERSFIELD!!
This so cool! My mom told me on her way home from work there were a bunch of people on the corner of 24th and Oak Street protesting Bush.

Right on Bakersfield!! People ARE waking up!

43. Bakersfield!!!
Oh my god. Bill Thomas is from there. No offense, but Bakersfield is where lizards go to die. Bill Thomas will return to, and die there some day like the lizard he is.

To put this in perspective, the mississippi running over its banks and flooding the midwest several years ago for miles around was nothing. Hurricane Andrew, the market crash of '29, The San Francisco earthqauke back in the early 1900's, the sinking of the Titanic, Nagasaki and Hiroshima were nothing compared to this. Bakersfield may be the ominous sign that the repugs hate to see. It may signal the start of the repug Waterloo.

3. Bakersfield: an RV in every garage & a gunrack in every pickup
That takes nerve. This is Bill Thomas's home base. Even in the 70s it was open season on "longhairs" and "hippies" in Bakersfield.

5. In Bakersfield???
Wow. This is not exactly the same as a * protest in San Francisco. Can I hope I'll read about it in my local paper? I'm a couple hours south. If it makes your local paper, post a link!

Around these parts, a small group of people have to be very courageous and able to defend themselves to make such a statement.

10. I worked that same corner
Edited on Sat Jul-26-03 02:59 PM by ronnykmarshall
In 1984 I was working for Mondale and we used that same spot for visabililty. The woman that owns the high rise condo complex near there sent her gardener to try and get us to leave. I told him "if she wants us to leave, tell her to call the police or bring her ass down here herself." This was my start into the political world and I haven't looked back.

Rock on, Bakersfield Liberals!! You :kick: ass!

Mom said she didn't see anything in the Bakersfield Californian today, but that paper is a Bush * rag. Believe it or not, some loco .... I mean locals call it the "liberal" Californian. Shows how far the majority of Bkfld has it's head up it's ass.

8. I got a email today
about having an impeach Bush protest in SLO. It was decided against because there would be too many in the opposition to be effective. Do you have your ear closer to the ground on this one than me? I don't know what difference it would make if there was an opposition. What do you think, brook? Email me if you would rather not answer here.

12. Bill Thomas is a prick.
Same with the rest of the local officals. I had a friend who was a photographer that worked for some asshole Repug that was running for Cal Assembly in the 1980's. She was a lesbian and I went over to her house to hang out and that asshole was there. He wouldn't even say hello to me. Chicken shit. I wanted to throw my drink in his face. My friend's girlfriend and I went into the other room and he had to calm me down. I am SO glad to hear that things like this are happening. My liberal parents are thrilled too.

15. Our local club is looking for a candidate to replace
Mr. Thomas. Many of us on the coast have been gerrymandered into his district. Do you guys in Bakersfield have anyone in mind? Even if it is the last candidate who ran, he didn't get much exposure. We really should back up anyone who runs against Thomas in the next election. A grass roots effort is needed. God knows we need another Democratic seat in the H of R as well.

41. I'm not in CA, but I think that's a great idea!
I was appalled to discover that there are House districts where GOP incumbents run unopposed. If money is a problem, I wonder if the campaign could be modeled after Dean's--with MeetUps and lots of email (send this on to 5 friends sort of thing) and website stuff to start (with, eg, lists of sickening quotes, voting record, and maybe testamonials from famous local folks who like the Dem candidate, etc), and then tons of grassroots work. And link it to anti-Bush campaigning.

I'd love to see this tried in several "safe" districts--esp. DeLay's and Thomas's--oh why think small? I want every GOPer to be undermined. And I think it CAN be done. GOOD LUCK!!

11. Merle Haggard Country!
I would bet the new Merle Haggard song has
quite a bit to do with this change of heart!
Merle is King along with Buck Owens in Bakersfield!

there was a thread about the new Merle song yesterday,
and I am here to tell you, Merle is the ONLY voice that
can bring the flag wavers to consciousness about WHO
and WHAT is running this country.

I think His new song is the most patriotic thing anyone
has done for this country in a long time, BECAUSE...
NO ONE can reach the freepers like the HAGG-
When the Hagg speaks, they LISTEN.
He is more important in their lives than you can imagine.
They grew up on his music and has their utmost respect
and they are the ones we have to get into action alongside us.
Merle, the uniter!!!

21. Can't find the thread, dammit!
There was a thread about it yesterday.
It is about the media's complicity in the dis-information
and the fact that yound American's are dying because of it!
If that wont turn freeper heads, NOTHING will!
I will keep looking for you-
His official web site-
http://www.merlehaggard.com

I have a friend who knows him, I will call her and
see what I can find out.
The thread said that they were mailing it all over the country
to the country DJs, and that it was going to be PLASTERED
over the airwaves.
CAN"T WAIT!!!!!
MUST HAVE COPY NOW!

I LOVE THE HAGG!

36. Merle rocks
My Aunt dated Merle's best friend (Bobby Cox) back when they were very young. One time Merle and Bobby ran away from home and my Papa (grandfather) was PISSED and read mom and Aunt Pat the riot act trying locate Merle and Bobby.

Aunt Pat was going out with Bobby and Papa was trying to find those boys.

Aunt Pat: Daddy, we don't know where they went.

Papa (my grandfather): YesbygodyoudoandIknowit! --- All on word!

Ah yes! Little did I know that my Mom's childhood stories would come in handy.

One time in 1982, Bonnie Owens Haggard (ex wife of Buck Owens and Merle Haggard) came into a retail store I was working at and I told her that story. She just cracked up and said ... "Merle should use that in his book".

We weren't the bunch of country bumpkins people thought we were.

Not a big difference. Both are communities in the middle of the agricultural San Joaquin Valley. Most of the whites are rednecks and the rest of the population are Mexican American.

I'd like to inform you that there are THOUSANDS and THOUSANDS of ACTIVE liberals here in Fresno AND in Bakersfield and in Stockton and Modesto and Madera and Merced and all up and down this valley. I'm getting fucking SICK AND TIRED of you guys (fucking Bay Area, L.A. and San Diego assholes) having nothing but derision for the Valley. We grow your goddamned food so when you want to put THE WHOLE ENTIRE SAN JOAQUIN VALLEY down with your class-structured snobbishness, please don't do it with a mouthful of salad.

26. Honey,
I know there are a minority of liberals there and in other conservative hot spots in our fair state including where I live. That doesn't change things. I have spent ten years of my life traveling up and down Hwy 5 and Hwy 99 and it is predominantly conservative, flat and agricultural. You can't photoshop reality.

Right now that is all I am going to say. When you are through calling me names, let's talk it over. We are both on the same side. I like your posts and find them very informative. I notice that you haven't attacked anyone else on this post who said the same things I did. If you can't stand me, there is the ignore button.

That is so great! Getting a group of people together IN THE LION'S DEN of very conservative Bakersfield takes a helluva lot of courage and something that snob-asses from other more populace parts of the state might take note of and quit deriding Central California -- something I'm getting rather militant about.

35. This liberal on the coast loves the San Joaquin Valley!
I'm halfway between L.A. and Santa Barbara (Ventura County) and we're agricultural enough to be called "Bakersfield by the sea." My Congressman & Assemblyman are Repukes of the worst kind, and this is "Reagan Country" as his library is 20 minutes away. :puke:

I just really hope all of us diverse Californians can come together to stop the coup-in-progress by Repugs who overturn elections they can't steal.

I used to laugh derisively at those poor people in Texas and Florida and elsewhere and all their electoral woes, and now we're in for a mother of a fight.

I'm happy that other California communities are dedicated, liberal and pissed off. We've got a lot of work to do and we can do it better together.

I still let people know that the FreeRepublic P.O. Box is listed as Fresno. Just so they know what I am up against. It is hard to get along here with these people sometimes. Can you blame them though, for not likeing the central valleys politics, look what it has produced for politicians. That Pompo freak out of Modesto, Thomas from Bakersfield, Nunez from Fresno. I wrote Nunez before the war and he called me a French German non-patriotic person. Screw him too.

I agree with you though. It would be easy to live in the Bay Area with my political ideas.

I see that you have a Dean thing on your post, do you make the meetups here in Fresno, or the Visalia/Porterville one?
