Bill Maher
My favorite line last night was RE the Gray Davis recall. He said, "Great, at least with Arnold we finally have a candidate who can explain the administrations domestic/social policy in its original German." My fucking jaw hit the FLOOR!!! LOVED it!!!

Original thread for the show is here but it's pretty well buried now.

1. I'm guessing....
There's now going to be a really nice long thread about how bad he was to trash the Dems for pounding on the 16 words. So I want to get my 2 cents in before the thread runs out. First, he's absolutely right about not pushing the impeachment angle. It is a total loser for Democrats. It will be counterproductive and the people just won't go for it. They already have too much shit to handle--and if we distract them and us from the election, it's lost. Second, he is wrong to dismiss the 16 words as an issue (and he got slapped down real good on that by the sharp, funny layers of his Oreo cookie panel--think Bay Buchanan was having terrible, unspeakable fantasies after being served up as the creme in that one?).

3. also he did a virtual ad for retaining Gov Davis
mentioned his Nam record and replacing him with a Viennese body builder. The should clip that and use it for the campaign. Very good show.

2. Bill LOVES the repig talking points
and bandies them about with great facility.

Case in point: last night, Bill says the Dems are up in arms about 16 little words and that they should move on. WRONG! The 16 little words meme is disinformation that Condi Rice threw into the discourse, not the Dems. It is a distraction tactic that the media - including "liberal" Bill Maher - are only too happy to jump on to protect the boy king. The entire SOTU was a recitation of previously debunked LIES. The 16 words in question were only a small part of the pack of lies. By trying to narrow debate to the 16 words, the repigs set up a strawman that they hope to knock down with the help of idiots like Maher asking us to "move on." Once they accomplish that, the entire SOTU becomes "old news...we've dealt with that...why can't the left just get over it" crapola and is off limits for further debate.

Bill Maher is no friend of the left. Just because he gets off the occasional obvious zinger against a right-wing target doesn't mean that he's an equal opportunity abuser.

4. This is my first post here, so be polite.
For all those who will bash Maher, please remember he is not a liberal. He is a very proud libertarian. He can waffle between the ideologies all he likes. Just agree with him when he says something you like and vow to prove him wrong when he says something you don't.

Please remember to be kind to all third parties!

5. Good point, midnight, and welcome
I pretty much liked everything he said last night. The biggest debate in my head right now is whether I would prefer a D. L. Hughley/Aaron MacGruder for president ticket, or a MacGruder/Hughley ticket. Wow, they were so great.

20. He's a "philosophical libertarian"
but he is liberal, not 'A' liberal, but he is liberal and libertine.

he doesn't whore for anyone and he hates party politics.

People here are too damn dogmatic. He thinks the most important thing right now is to win the peace. And he does't make up his mind about anything until he has proof.

I'm not ready to say Bush lied about the uranium until there is an investigation, because how would any of us know

6. 16 words
I thought Maher was being more of a devil's advocate and trying not to gang up on Buchanan. But he's correct in a sense. Concentration on the 16 words is a trap. It trivializes the issue. We need to move beyond them and raise the ante to encompass other words and ultimately the big lie.

7. I thought Bay was a pretty good sport.
For a conservative, she's not that bad, if you turn the mute on when she speaks. And, of course, it's easier to stomach a conservative when there is a genuine counter-voice, not to mention the audience totally being on Hughley and McGruder's side. But she was a good sport, and (I may regret this later) I kinda liked her.

17. Agree with you about Bay
definitely the most likeable, rational conservative I've seen since there were intelligent, moderate Republicans in office. Oh, how the Republican Party has fallen. From men like Everett Dirksen and Gerald Ford to men like Tom DeLay and Trent Lott. The Republicans have allowed their party to be hijacked by low-brow fundamentalists motivated by hate and greed. Can you imagine Nelson Rockefeller having the time of day for someone like Newt Gingrich? Not likely.

Is Bay Buchanan related to Pat?
I've seen her on CNN, she sounds and looks like Pat Buchanan a little bit, in my opinion.

8. Fave line: Graham "Osama bin Forgotten"
He got laughs and applause for that one.

Also, Maher's various means of not actually SAYING "Saudi Arabia,"...

"A veritable...MECCA...of terrorists!"

"It rhymes with (dang, can't remember what it rhymed with, anybody help?)

"Lawrence of..."

11. "A veritable Mecca of terrorists"
LOL!

I have a lot of problems with some of the things Bill says, but at least he's saying the things that need to be said re: * Junta, foreign policy, drug war. He's one of the few and it's more than the occasional zinger against these errant policies, Repuke or Dem.

13. Bill Maher takes jokes from DU, too
Or else he's thinking many of the same things we are.

Some of the jokes seem to be word for word by funny DUers, though.

14. Aaron Magruder is a total Hottie!!!
I was blown away by him--his points were right on! While arguing with Bay Buchanan about the Uranium lie he said, "So why don't we disband the CIA and set up the Department of Making Shit Up?"

18. Aaron is wonderful
isn't he? He makes his points so calmly and succinctly. He's the anti-thesis of the rightwing hate-talkers. I'd LOVE to see him demolish O'Reilly, Hannity, and Rush. He's a class act. Rush would tremble for weeks after an encounter with Aaron.
