Susan Estrich criticizes the "Hate Bush" meeting. . .
Susan Estrich
Politics of hate won't beat Bush

December 4, 2003

Anyone up for a "Hate Bush" meeting in Hollywood?
Doesn't it sound like just the sort of thing
conservatives would invent to make liberals look
stupid and open the conservative spigots?

But this was no right-wing conspiracy. Matt Drudge may
be the one selling the idea that Hollywood held a
"Hate Bush" meeting, but he didn't come up with the
title. This is a self-inflicted wound by another silly
Hollywood liberal giving honest politics a bad name.
-snip-

Productive? I bet it produced a lot of money for
George Bush. And worse, it helps produce votes for
him.

The people whose votes Democrats will need to defeat
George Bush don't hate him. On a personal level, they
like him. They need to be convinced not to vote for
him, for reasons that have to do with the war, or
special interests or the economy. "Hate Bush"
headlines do just the opposite.

Enemies are one thing, but with friends like Laurie
David, the Democratic nominee is going to need all the
help he can get.

It was kinda dissapointing, I wish Stewart would've sliced Hannity a bit, take him down a peg.

Several of my friends were very disturbed by Colmes' face.

"It causes me pain to look at it..."

"He's got a certain pedophile look about him."

I tried to explain it was called "ruggedly handsome," but for some reason - nobody believed me.

3. She has to criticize us
or risk being fired by Faux. Where is her criticism of all the "Hate Clinton" parties (they weren't given names back then, but that's what they were) during the 90s? Tell her to go help another democrat lose a campaign; it's what she does best.

Never mind the fact that Lloyd Grove of NY Daily News confirmed Laurie
David didn't even send out the invitation with 'Hate Bush', it was forwarded and added to the title later down the food chain.

17. I don't agree with her premise...
that people who we need to vote against Bush will not be hating him. I believe that many who turn on him *will hate him. Hate him for killing their military kin in the Middle East, hate him for losing them their jobs, hate him for lying to them at every turn. I think there's plenty of hate for the shrub to go around and include those who voted for him the first time around. And I can't see all the Greens who voted for Nader risking another 4 years of *. Especially after the recent decision regarding mercury. They'd be nuts to vote for Nader again.

So, I guess that I feel that SE has spent too much time working on Faux. She needs a reality check or at least to pull her head out of her ass. I'll be glad to send her an email and share my thoughts.

21. Sorry Susan...you got your biggest point wrong!!
Laurie David did not "bill" the meeting as a "hate Bush" meeting....Matt Sludge did, and his report was a bald-faced lie.

http://www.jewishworldreview.com/1203/grove120203.asp

<snip>
Drudge claimed on his Web site — erroneously, I've concluded — that David titled an e-mail about the event at the Beverly Hilton, to be co-hosted by the likes of superagent Ari Emanuel and "Seinfeld" star Julia Louis-Dreyfus, "with the bold heading: 'Hate Bush 12/2 — Event.' "

In response, David told me Monday, she was subjected to a barrage "of ugly messages," including this one from an Akron, Ohio, man who somehow managed to obtain her private fax number:

"Dear Laurie David: Thanks for revealing how Compassionate Liberals such as yourself would initiate a Hate Bush campaign. And some wonder why there is increasing anti-Semitism. I'm not."
<snip>

Sludge runs made-up articles quite often, actually. It gets him into the Fox news cycle, and feeds red meat to the RW base.

And you got hooked to the gills...Sucker!!

Acting as if the 1990’s had never occurred; when a pundit for the rightwing shill ‘Faux News’ has the audacity to complain about how many of the American people loathe Mr. Bush* (yourself, Sean Hannity, Bill O’Reilly, etc) clearly someone is doing something right!

*The legitimacy of the Bush presidency is in dispute.

25. a response to Susan
Sent via email:

Regarding your article about the "hate bush" meeting:
First of all: the "hate bush" title was made up by someone in the
process of forwarding emails about this around the country. This has
been publicized repeatedly since this gathering was first announced, and
I don't quite believe that you don't know this. Drudge picked it and up
and ran with it -- unverified, of course, which is his style. Your
style, however, should be a bit more careful, particularly since you
presume to speak for Democrats, liberals and progressives.
Secondly, anger has served the right-wing hate movement fairly well,
don't you think?
It certainly fueled an entire industry of Clinton-hating for the past
decade that was very profitable for a number of pundits whose only claim
to fame is that they are willing to humiliate themselves with their
abject, irrational and often psychotic hatred of Clinton for offenses
both real and imagined.
If anger propels more people to become aware, question this dangerous
administration, pressure their representatives to adopt sensible
policies that benefit the many over the few, and eventually unseat this
unelected fraud who is destroying our country, I have no problem with
it.
Question is: Why should you? The only answer I can come up with is that
you are yet another so-called Democrat pretending to be so concerned for
the future of the party, while taking money from Fox news and any other
corporate media outlet that will pay you for your "wisdom."
Thanks anyway -- I'll formulate my own opinions based on facts -- not
Rupert Murdoch's fantasies.

26. as a political commentator she's as useless as teats on a bull
her entire premise is so stupidly wrong in thinking that those who like bush on a personal level will be convinced to vote against him because of the war, special interests, and economics.

anyone who believes that bush is personally a nice guy is hardly the type to vote against him, because that which he has done about the war, special intersts, the environment, and the economy are exactly those traits that reveal bush to be a boldfaced liar.

so, estrich is referring to not pissing off people who accept bush's personal hypocrisy, but just dont like what it leads to?

as if.

35. I Have Never Heard Estrich Say Anthing Progressive
Susan Estrich keeps getting introduced on Fox and elsewhere as a liberal or progressive. After listening to her repeatedly, I have never heard her defend a Democrat or take a progressive position. Her whole "schtick" seems to be that of the liberal who, in the particular instance in which she is called upon as a commentator, has the enlightenment to be able to criticize the Democrat that one time, therefore having credibility. In other words, she tries to present herself as that liberal who can self-criticize her own party, unlike lock-step Republicans. But for that particular role to carry any weight, she has to have taken solidly liberal positions in the past. I have never heard her voice any such positions, however. Why don't they interview Erwin Chemerinsky, instead? Another USC Professor of Law, he is one of the great voices of the left, an intellectual and deep thinker with far superior educational credentials than Ms. Estrich.

Susan was correct in her assessment. It would be a terribly stupid thing to do. We don't need that kind of publicity. It is one thing to lambast Bush* policies and performance but to actually bill this as a Hate Bush* fest is stupid. IMHO We can and should do much better.
