Gloves Off, Kerry Slams Bush As Dangerously Incompetent
Simply put: The Bush Administration has pursued the most arrogant, inept, reckless and ideological foreign policy in modern history. In the wake of the September 11th terrorist attacks, the world rallied to the common cause of fighting terrorism...Now the United Nations is divided and we are fighting an increasingly deadly guerrilla war in Iraq almost singlehandedly. We have lost the good will of the world, overextended our troops, and endangered not enhanced our own security.

President Bush says that the cooperation of other nations, particularly our allies, is critical to our war on terrorism. And he’s right. Yet his administration consistently runs roughshod over the interests of those nations on a broad range or issues – from climate control to the International Court of Justice to the role of the United Nations to trade to rebuilding Iraq. And by acting without international sanction in Iraq, the Administration has in effect invited other nations to invoke the same precedent to attack their adversaries – or to develop nuclear, biological or chemical weapons to deter such an attack.

Triumphalism may make the armchair warriors now in the seats of power feel good, but it does not serve America’s interests.

Those of us who seek the Democratic presidential nomination owe the American people more than just anger or criticism of the Bush foreign policy or even piecemeal solutions. We need to convince America that Democrats are responsible stewards of our national security and America’s role in the world.

The war on terrorism is not just an American cause; it is a global conflict against a hidden and deadly enemy with many faces in many places. No matter how much power we have, we cannot prevail single-handedly.

As President, I will elevate non-proliferation to the top of the global agenda and create a new framework with tough, accountable, enforceable standards.

On this issue, too, the Administration’s unilateralism is profoundly dangerous. Today, George Bush is poised to set off a new nuclear arms race by building bunker-busting tactical nuclear weapons –smaller and, some incredibly believe, more “usable” nuclear bombs. I don’t want a world with usable nuclear bombs. As President, I will engage Iran and renew bilateral negotiations with North Korea on the nuclear issue – and I will seek a new international protocol to track and account for existing nuclear weapons and to deter the development of chemical and biological arsenals.

All this and more – including economic and social progress in the poorest countries so we can drain the swamps where terrorists breed – cannot be achieved if the United States goes it alone, alienates the world, and simply seeks to impose its will.

Finally, we must recognize that America will only be secure if our intelligence is sound. The Bush Administration has stonewalled the 9/11 Commission and resisted Congressional investigations of our intelligence failures. The need here is to fix the problem, not the blame -- and speedy completion of this task is critical to prevent and respond to future terrorist attacks.

2. nice stuff
politics make for strange bedfellows - didn't someone say that once? -especially in strange times. I'm still undecided and loving it. Let the games begin.

3. Contradiction to himself?
I'll show you. Earlier today he said he would send Poppy Bush or James Baker as a Mideast envoy if he was elected President.

that's the worst thing he can do, and you STILL continue to support him? Kerry just fell into 9th on my list (he was 4th) and continue to dig himself a grave-like hole.

4. 9th?
So Al Sharpton is more qualified to be president than Kerry?
And Joe Lieberman would be a better alternative?

6. So you don't like what he had to say?
I can find fault with every candidate but not when they speak so strongly against this Cabal that is in power. Every effort is appreciated and who knows it may spur others to raise their voice also. Applaud what he says unless you disagree and then vote for your choice. It is bound to get even more interesting as time goes on. People need to hear these things whether you like the man that is telling them or not.

I wrote a number of posts and a few PM's yesterday saying that, while Kerry's proposal to reduce many of the Patriot Act's more heinous provisions was a good start, it did not come even close to going far enough ...

The war in Iraq is going to destroy not just this country but any hope for peace in the world for generations to come ... this a both tragic and staggering to comprehend ... i'll say it again ... we will not be able to have peace in the world for generations to come ...

We are destroying the fabric for peace everywhere around the world.

I said Kerry, and I hated his IWR vote, needs to show real leadership on the war ... I said Kerry needs to speak out against what is happening NOW in Iraq ... frankly, I don't give a damn whether people will or won't vote for him because of his IWR vote ... we need to support Kerry, and ANY democrat, who fights as hard as they can to stop this war and put an end to the bush bullshit ...

If Kerry stands up tall now, great ... if he can convince us all with real successes making real differences on the big issues, great ...

We need to stop this "too little too late" nonsense ... hear these words: "we need every warrior we can get to fight as hard as possible" ... it may be too little too late for YOU to give your vote to Kerry ... fine ... but don't fail to support anyone who stands up tall and fights the battle we are all fighting ... when he, or anyone, takes on bush and his evil empire, stand up and applaud as loudly as you can ... it doesn't mean that he's your candidate ... it means that's what democrats need to be doing ... let them know you appreciate the effort ...

one last point ... i criticized Kerry for not speaking out forcefully against the 9/11 coverup and the intelligence coverup regarding the misinformation campaign on Iraq ... where was Kerry when his buddy Max Cleland spoke out against the 9/11 coverup ... is Kerry reading my DU posts ??? if so, I'm glad ...

criticize him all you want to ... i'm not supporting him ... but the Kerry of the last few days just ain't the same guy who got off to such a slow start in this campaign ... John Kerry, ya done real good man !!! Keep it up ... I'm watching and I'm listening to you ...

12. I think that's a great speech!
And I like to read about candidates' actual ideas instead of just Bush bashing. We can't win by just bashing Bush, we need plans of our own. I was impressed by this speech. It's a good start.

10. Good ol' "shoot from the hip" Kerry
Criticized Dean for wanting sanctions against Saudi Arabia, then adopts the same stance only weeks later.

It's nice he's taking on Bush this way, although the phrase "drain the swap of terrorists" makes me cringe since I've seen in too much neocon propaganda.

13. Where Has He been?
Dean has been nailing Bush to the wall for over a year, while Kerry was sucking up because an anti war candidate had no chanch to be elected. I think he guessed wrong. Where did Kerry hang his pink tu tu? To little to late.

16. This is Kerry's THIRD foreign policy speech in a year.
Edited on Wed Dec-03-03 08:58 PM by blm
Where have you been, Upfront?

And before that he was the only one criticizing Bush substantively on foreign policy according to Joe Conason. Or did you forget that Gore and Kerry were the only two hitting Bush on those issues throughout 2002?

yet reasonable man with the balance necessary to undo the mound of wrong done by the current misadministration.. How very admirable he is.

19. Smack
Ouch.

The Republicans would be correct in calling this "rhetorical hate speech" if it weren't just so damn true!!

I have always explained my hatred of Bush to people using this example:
He is one of two things: He is either a dangerous fanatic who knows what he is doing and uses American lives to push his twisted agenda,
OR
He is a complete and total moron, without control or understanding of what is going on around him, and is therefore dangerously incompetent.

Nicely done, Kerry.
