Crossfire thread (12/03/03) Dean challenges Bush
Edited on Wed Dec-03-03 04:26 PM by Wonk
http://www.cnn.com/CNN/Programs/crossfire/

The self-proclaimed "straight-talking" presidential hopeful Howard Dean is taking hits for being less than forthcoming with some of his official records as Vermont governor. Facing mounting criticism from rivals, columnists, and others just bent on stopping his express train to the nomination, Dean offered a challenge to a political duel; he'll unseal his gubernatorial records if George Bush unseals his. Is Dean hiding something in his Green Mountain State closet? Could the spiraling controversy slow Dean's momentum, or will it be just a penny on the railroad track?

TONIGHT'S GUESTS:
¥Ê Jerry Nadler, D-New York, endorsed Howard Dean
¥Ê Ed Rogers, Republican strategist

7. I'm watching....
This issue is getting turned around on the Bushees...Enron energy policy, CIA leak, the Saudis & 9/11 report, etc.

This is going nowhere for the Republicans. Bush is the president, for Christ's sake. And what the hell could Dean possibly have to hide? Nothing. He's just playing with them.

9. well, Dean fans
Even *I* have to side with Dean here. When Tucker Carlson throws out the "Is Dean arrogant?" question, I cringe. I have lots of problems with Dean, but being arrogant myself, I think that's a virtue. :-)

22. I believe it would be necessary to form a line
I would camp out overnight, myself.

The funny part is that as conservative pundits go, Tucker isn't all that horrible in my opinion. That's not saying much of course. But if I could only smack, say, two conservative pundits, he wouldn't be one of them.

10. Who cares if Dean is hiding something?
All politicians have some of their records sealed. Bashing Dean, who will probably get the nomination, is like saying to Karl Rove, "Hey, I got an idea of what type of ads you might want to run against Dean."

Dean is a candid person who has absolutely no ties to the neoconservative cabal. Enough said.

13. He's not hiding anything, anyway.
What the hell could he possibly have to hide?

This is just getting blown up by the Republiclowns, and the other Dem nominees. Bush is walking straight into massive artillery fire, though, by bringing it up. He, of all people, oughta lay off on this one. Rove is stupid, sometimes.

25. Exactly

How can one compare the significance of hiding 9/11 records to a governor's records that are maintained in accordance with state policy (although admittedly for a bit longer than usual).

16. begala
a short discussion on the washington metro allowing ads for the legalization and taxation of marijuana in subway stations. the ad said
"enjoy better sex" or something.
carlson was against it and begala was too. begalla went so far as to dredge up a ridiculous study from the 80's that proposed men could grow breasts from pot! begala said he didn't think that was so sexy. that was his argument against the ad!!!!
i don't think these two boys would know good sex if their life depended on it.

17. The GOP spokesgooks on Xfire are getting more apoplectic each day
Edited on Wed Dec-03-03 05:05 PM by librechik
The Dems they've been casting lately have had them all tied up in knots by the first remark, and all the bastards can do is sputter and scream! Today's GOP got all testy, yesterday's monstrosity threw a hissy fit at the Dem for calmly responding that it was patriotic to express dissent--Novak looked bad on that one too--I was dying for the guy to stand up and say, "Bob, you have some nerve for complaining about me expressing my 1st amendment rights when you are the biggest traitor still working in the media today and everyone knows it!"

Relentlessly changing the subject will not change the FACT that Bush got nailed for withholding evidence about the energy bill, the Medicare bill, the PATRIOT act, the 9/11 commission and on and on--they look pretty silly trying to paint Dean with the "secretive" brush!

24. No - it's called SMART POLITICS - and a strategy to WIN.
Bunkerboy changed the rules - all of them.

From "Marquis of Queensbury" gentlemanly debate to gutter fighting.

Hiding records.

Spending like a drunk without matching funds.

The list is endless.

BUNKERBOY unilaterally did this. We must adapt or perish.

of course, we could still play by being "nicey" "nicey" - but we'd LOSE!

Dean just grasps the new rules better than most. The others are just now beginning to grasp the concept.

Better late than never.
