In a story that I have not seen on any major media source, congress has given the finger to American citizens in spite of the millions of phone calls, letters and emails they received on the subject of media conglomerates. Even though almost all congress members and senators vowed to not let this happen, they caved to the demands of the media moguls. The story goes something like this:
The Federal Communications Commission, being a wholy owned subsidiary of American media, decided that it's owners were not making enough profit and ruled that most regulations limiting media ownership should be scrapped. Americans were insenced and phoned and wrote literally millions of times to their congressional representatives. Responding to all these protests congress, to a man, resolved to not let this stand.
Meanwhile, Rupert Murdock, mogul first class, anticipated the loosened rules and bought up more stations. When it looked as if the congress would stand up for us, Rupert paniced and called the White House, demanding that George do something before he lost any money. George, of course, called his whip wielding foremen in congress and explained just how much media campaign contributions they would lose unless they realized the importance of Mr. Murdock's profits to the world economy. Congress, ever mindfull of which side their bread was buttered on, instantly saw their error and agreed to let Mr. Murdock keep all the stations he had bought even though when he had bought them he was in violation of current regulations. Was it Will Rogers who said "We have the best congress money can buy"?
Memorial services will be held sunday for American democracy. It had been ailing for several years, but has finally succumed to the virus that had invaded its system: MONEY. Common Cause estimates that in the last eight years the media and their stooges have given congress $29 million, and spent $95 million lobbying Washington D.C.
Why am I so angry over this userpation of citizens rights? Simple. Without a vibrant and independant media democracy is lost. We get not news, but government press releases. God, do I miss the old republic. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- The media isn't talking about this so we have to do the talking. Everyone should write to their papers.
