What happens if electoral college ties?
Edited on Fri Jul-25-03 05:46 PM by Bombtrack
I was just using the "edwards for prez" interactive electoral map and thinking about the different candidates. http://www.edwardsforprez.com/map.html

I was figuring out what Kerry would need to do to win it, because he's my second choice among those candidates I believe have shots at winning the nom(I also include Dean, Gephardt, and Edwards in that category).

I know the some states that his campaign would really go after and I also know which Gore states that the RNC believes that it can win. Those states are New Mexico, Iowa, Wisconsin, and Pennsylvania.

Of those states I think that the only one Kerry has a better shot at winning is Pennsylvania, which is good because it is the third most important swing state.

But I looked at if Bush did win IO, NM, and WI,
and if Kerry won every other Gore state plus NH, and FL(I know it's a huge longshot for Kerry, but it's in the competative range if graham is his veep).

it would come out 269-269

1. it goes to the House
and thus to Bush since they control the House. However the Dem candidate would then become VP.

3. In the House, each STATE gets one vote...
meaning that we'd win CA and TX but the Repukes would win FL, PA, OH, and MI (I think).

Of course, this is the 109th House, so we'd have to see what happened in the 2004 elections.

5. I'm pretty sure it would be the 108th house in a lame duck session
so barring a massive die off or early retirement, we'd be stuck with GWBush's second illegal term if the states work out. Geez

7. It would absolutely be the 108th Congress in a Lame Duck session
And that would guarantee Bush in office for four more years.

We must win in 2004, and by my estimation factoring in the fraud that will be rampant by the Repukes in 2004, it must be by double digit margins to come out squeaking by.

That means if we don't go in polling 60% to 40%, we will lose. A super majority is the only way we will win.

6. since there are 50 states- that could end in a tie, too-
And I think that it's at that point in the process that the Constitution allows for a mano-a-mano tag-team fight to the death between the sets of candidates...(I always used to get confused about that in civics class...)

8. Of course Queensburry rules would apply
It's wierd how they set up a ring in the well of the house. Most people don't relize it but that's how Adams lost his second term.

4. Or ... the supreme court!!!
That's it, THEY can 'help' us find a president!!! :eyes: :eyes: :eyes:

After all, the repukes know that the Dem 'leadership' would likely roll over again, should the SCOTUS help the repukes steal 2004.

11. There will be the appearance of an election
Even if said election is a fraud.

Remember the stock market took a heavy heavy hit after the confusion of the November 2000 election. Republicans love of power must be balanced against their love of wealth.
