"Finally,"
"a candidate who can explain the Bush administration's positions on civil liberties in the original German. "

Love him or hate him, you have to admit that sometimes Bill Maher really hit the mark.

1. Boy, he sure nailed it.
The repukes really do hate popular elections, don't they. Clinton gets reelected in a landslide, so they impeach him. Gore wins the popular vote, so they sue. Davis wins in CA, so they use an arcane rule to recall him. It looks like they'll be two for three. I wonder what's next on their electoral agenda?

2. I disagree with Maher. Recall is a good thing.
It's a pity that it can't be applied to federal office.

His reference to 'the howling mob' is ugly and elitist--that 'mob' is more appropriately called 'citizens who vote'.

3. ....
I agree with him. Actually, I thought I supported the recall (without looking into it much), but he lays it out well.

"Here's why the economy turned: The dot-com bubble burst. (Obviously on the orders of Gray Davis.) The airline industry collapsed. (Just as Gray Davis planned.) We fought two wars. (Playing right into Gray Davis' hands.) And Dick Cheney's friends at Enron "gamed" the energy market and ripped off the state for billions.

So you can see the problem: Gray Davis."

Heh.

4. A line taken from Molly Ivins
when she was commenting on Pat Buchanan's speech at the Republican National Convention in 1992, I believe. "It sounded better in the original German" is what she said, I think.
